Dave and Steve after Van H - all of is a MUST HAVE
David Lee Roth's departure from Van Halen in 1985 left the music world half in the state of panic. Hold-out music snobs reject anything from either camp; but I don't understand it. David's music and Van Halen with Sammy Haggar sit in a very similar lane, if anyone were to ask me. And I honestly think BOTH just got better as the result of the departure. The songs on this release are bumper-to-bumper great stuff. There was an obvious maturing in style, not that it was ever lacking before. Some think this second album was somehow lesser to Eat Em And Smile, but I think not. When I listen to one, I'm not happy until I've listened to the other. To me it's just part 1 and part 2. Listening back to Dave, takes me back to the time of cruising the beach, windows down, and custom stereo cranked. Every song left an impression. And now, with my own musical maturity as a guitar player of 32 years, my appreciation for the band - again in both camps - and their talents. How, I often wonder, was Dave able to be on the same band with that level of talent and creativity without skipping a beat? - excuse the pun. Leaving the unprecedented creative piano-style playing of Eddie V (and what seems to me to be a crime of overshadowing that his brother's drums are not as equally recognized) only to bring to the public attention a Master at the level of Steve Vai, Gregg BIssonette on drums, and the widely recognized base stylist, Billy Sheehan, that we have on both Eat Em and Smile and Skyscraper. To me, Vai is good enough a reason to buy this album. Same with the old competing crew, even if someone didn't like Sammy (though I can't fathom why that would be). Just because in their personal lives, they may have been going at each other for a time does not mean we have to chose a side. They were the soundtrack of our lives. Their music defined a Generation and inspired thousands. All of these guys were awesome, to borrow a phrase to turn it into a question: Shall we ever see their like again?Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
