The Castro neighborhood of San Francisco might well be considered the heart of gay America or of the gay world for that matter. The stories and memories brought out in Love, Castro Street bring that neighborhood to life. If one cannot visit the Castro in person, which every gay American should, then absorbing some of the recollections found in this work is a good beginning. The Castro comes alive as piece of gay history, gay culture and gay life as one shares the memories of the writers who contribute to this work. Humerous, thought provoking, sentimental, vigorous and sad each chapter is an individual portrait of the larger group portrait which makes up this significant piece of real estate. To the GLBT reader the Castro is a mecca, a homeland, a safe-zone and to the straight reader it becomes more understood as a "holy-land" for their GLBT friends and family. It is a quick read, an enjoyable read and a must read for anyone seeking an understanding of this gay oasis. The work's only flaw is that it ends too quickly and leaves us with many more stories still untold.Read full review
