This is an esoteric and very profound work of literature, as old as the Iliad. This was originally a stage production. Don’t expect to be dazzled by CGI, but if you have the patience to watch it though you might just learn the meaning of life.

This classic Indian epic is presented well in this film. It should be studied by anybody truly interested in philosophy or comparative religions.

Been wanting a copy for years. Only the 300+ minute, 2002 version is worthwhile, others are over edited.

I first seen this movie some 20 years ago, on TV show in Japan. Japanese subtitle translation was awfully bad, many mis-translations and short tongued, but enough for the complaint... Within this 20 years I watched this movies many times on occasions, and am still surprised to find how meaningful and full of new discoveries in accordance to my aging. I especially like the scene, their conversations, when Krishna talked feebled and cowarded Arjuna into meaning of true freedom, therefore, fighting spontaneously. This movie is, as other reviewers mention, a true masterpiece, although quiet and subtle, but vigorous and intriguing. Not the kind of movie who wants a Hollywood style entertainment.
Fantastic production of one of the world's greatest epic poems.

Very enjoyable. Diverse multinational cast was disconcerting at first but portrayed our universal struggles in an appealing and provacative way. I bought the DVD to better understand "The Bhagavita Gita and the West", which includes a great translation of the Bhagavata Gita, lectures by Rudolf Steiner, and a terrific introduction to both by Robert McDermott. These connect the Krishna soul to the awakening of Paul on the road to Damascus. A great background video regarding the historical period in India: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1ReA4K/www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FomeYYxzno/
Namaste to all, Mahabharata by Peter Brook's is good but original Mahabharata dvd of B R Chopra from Hindu Hindi bollywood India really excellant - also it has lots of details and information.
There are not words enough to describe the brilliance and majesty of Peter Brooks' telling of this ancient story so beloved by Hindus of every stripe and by those of us whose spiritual path has been influenced by the Hindu way. All performances are flawless. I've already watched it about 10 times.
