Wonder Why We Fight?
Check out Michael Yon’s biography at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Yon; like anything else at Wiki – take it for what it’s worth. I bought the book because a friend urged me to watch the “Why We Fight” “documentary”. I define a “documentary” as an unbiased treatment of a subject – a provision of data without editorial. “Why We Fight” is not a documentary within that definition; it advocates the proposition that the US is an imperialist power (a la Rome) fighting for oil. It is evident that, in fact, “Why We Fight” is primarily, simply anti-capitalist (i.e., anti-free market). Michael Yon’s book is a “documentary” – yes, he’s biased and editorializes in favor of the US (and British & Iraqi) military. But he does not argue the legitimacy of the War – pro or ... I’m a lawyer, and abide by the evidentiary principle that actions/deeds serve as circumstantial evidence of intent. Read the book and you will learn what the various military forces are doing in Iraq. Not what they are “doing there” in the sense of why they are there, but what they are “doing” day-to-day. You will learn mostly about what the infantry troops are doing on the ground, but you will also learn a sense of what the brass is “doing”. Once you have the data on what is going on – you make up your own mind about our intentions. Will this book change your opinions? You know, it might. You are very likely to learn facts about the military operations in Iraq that you did not know. You haven’t seen this kind of data on TV. But this is data you should believe (see Yon’s bio – which explains in detail how his facts are gathered). There is a lot of it, and before you decide whether it changes your mind, you should think about it pretty carefully. The book (around 220 pages) moves pretty quickly – and you will find yourself thinking at the end. I did. But my purpose is not to advocate for what I decided – do it for yourself. Stylistically, the book leaves room for literary growth. It jumps around; at times, you are not sure where you are or when. Yon is not a polished writer (and the book could have stood another proof-reading before being put to bed), but you will not have trouble understanding him. Yon is not an egotist – he does not get in the way of his reporting. Occasionally, it occurred to me that he was using the first person, plural in some of his descriptions – as in “we” did such-and-such, when he means the military units did such-and-such. But, in the end, it was OK. Yon was Special Forces, and is unapologetic in favoring our military. He is entitled. And he is entitled to use it as a journalist because he did not let his bias get in the way of truth: when he saw incompetent soldiering (grunt or brass), he set it out. You will not, for example, accuse him of covering up, or excusing, the events at Abu Ghraib. I give it four stars. Style a little rough to call it excellent – but the content is there. Don’t bother to read this book if you want reinforcement for political beliefs. Read it prepared to learn things you did not know.

Non bias discription on actual conduct in Iraq, good and bad. It's what the press doesn't want you to know. This book raises hope that we can bring freedom to Iraq and conquer terrorism in the Middle East. Learn about what counterinsurgency really means and how it has changed the respect our fighting forces have on the iraqi's. Great read.
