About this product

Product Information

Director Ron Howard delivers his finest effort with his extraordinary film, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2001. Based loosely on Sylvia Nasar's acclaimed biography of mathematician John Forbes Nash, the film is a compelling look at one man's genius, his debilitating mental illness, and the fine line between the two. A BEAUTIFUL MIND begins with Nash (Russell Crowe) at Princeton, where he struggles to think of an original idea, and the stroke of genius that will make him matter. Nash is eccentric, socially awkward, and extremely competitive. Eventually, he finds the inspiration for his innovative and influential work on game theory. He's chosen for a post at MIT, which includes crucial code-breaking work for the US government. There, he meets a beautiful and brilliant student, Alicia (Jennifer Connelly). They marry but their happiness is threatened, as Nash, belatedly diagnosed as schizophrenic, descends into madness. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman cannily condenses Nash's story, and the film manages to dramatize both Nash's mathematical brilliance and his schizophrenia in a compellingly visual manner. Crowe delivers a strong performance, and has real chemistry with Connelly. The two make the film's story about the power of love believable and moving.

    "An educational experience"

Very well done. Russell Crowe gave an excellent performance of the character he portrayed. The story line will keep ones attention all the way to the end.

  • Must-have video for genuis-folks, as we are mis- judged

Decided to buy as I saw it on broadcast CBS-TV and its about genuises group at Princeton, the mention of "non-linear theory". A Beautiful Mind is a must-have for smart-academics, who have been mistakenly judged, or mocked by society, or have that comraderie with other genuises. Genuises are often mocked by their female-equivalents, yet here the wife of John Nash has true love, that is so lacking in the liberated-age post 1966. Liked the cohesiveness of the grad-students, that rallied to support Nash in his lowest-ebb...great as he receives the writing-pens in the tea-room, I could feel the admiration of his comrades. Liked the competitive-style of fellow grad-students in good-taste and their style, not overly geek-punky. Wanted more of his theory in economics to prove...liberal ...

  • a beautiful mind

This movie is one of the best I think I've ever seen - the depicting of John Nash's tragic struggle with schizophrenia is handled carefully and brilliantly by Russell Crowe, and his loving wife, Jennifer Connelly. The movie's drama flows, and humor is woven in at exactly the right spots, making it enjoyable and keeping you in the story until the last moving moment. I would recommended it for anyone who loves a wonderful story, wonderful acting, or who wants a bit of a look inside the mind of a schizophrenic.

  • Excellent movie

My husband had not seen the movie so bought it for him. Great movie!

  • To broaden information on paranoia

This was purchased due to a family member having paranoid schizofreinoia. I thought the video would help us understand the challenges of the person suffering this disease. This story had comparisons of the same disorder but each person of course suffers in a somewhat different way. More compassion about the disease is a result of watching this touching story. It will be shared with other family members to better help them understand this mental illness.
