It is now 2022. In the 42 years since this movie was created oh, I've seen it probably six times all the way through. I saw it first when it was broadcast on PBS in Los Angeles and it was a stunning piece of work. I made VHS copies of the entire film from that broadcast. It's still is an unforgettable story even though it was shot on 16 mm to begin with. The Criterion copy is obviously a remastering of the entire film and it looks pretty good even though it's obviously old.

essential viewing. fassbinder's late masterwork,maybe his best.beautifully restored ,presenting for the first time, the director's intended vision. plus many special features, including booklet, (insightfully covering many components,the original novel, of the same name, it's author, the time,the place in which it takes place ,to mention one of many..) beautifully assembled ,with love and care, a very special edition , the criterion way, bless them, truly sublime. a thing of beauty. demanding time and attention, like all great work's of art.-lancescape1@gmail.com
Fassbinder's 15+ hour Magnum Opus and seminal tale of Berlin. A radical piece of 'anti-television' made for west-german tv in 1980. The new DVD set has much more to offer with tons of extras -- the best and rarest among them being Phil Jutzi's 1931 film which was actually scripted by Döblin himself. Lots of scholarly interviews and notes make this pretty much a definitive release. In all, a truly great set with fine graphic presentation, it's certainly a significant improvement on the previous dvd and vhs release.
If you like Fassbinder's films, then I highly recognize this film; a study in human frailty; well acted. It needs at least two viewings to be appreciated fully.
