All the aspects of plant shapes are covered as related to which parts are good for what. Also, how to prepare each part is given. Many books neglect that completely. Still, some plants and fruits were not mentioned at all. I realize there's a trillion different plants and you can't cover everything, but I have often wondered what some common North American plants are good for or are they not useful at all, or worse, poisonous? Like the Osage orange, or Bois d'Arc fruit. I tried it once, it numbed my mouth. Is it an analgesic? Peyote is not mentioned either. I have persimmon trees on my ranch and have no idea what the huge seeds are good for, if anything. Yes, if it takes another 300 pages - just to cover North America - maybe a Vol. 2 could be worthwhile. Nonetheless, the really good color photos and descriptions are what make this book rank above the rest.Read full review

I am glad to have this, but feel it is overpriced because many of the pages are not printed as clearly as they should be. Some of the print and pictures are a bit blurry, like the page shifted as printing or something. For something that relies heavily on clear pictures that is not good. If I had been able to see the lack of quality of the pages I would have searched for a better option.

I love the pictures. I can take the book out to my backyard and compare what I see growing with a picture of what I think it might be. I also like the maps. I live in Texas. If Texas is not colored in on the map of where a particular food grows, then I know I probably won't find that food in my backyard, even if something I find looks similar to a picture. That being said, Texas is a huge state, with a wide range of climate variances. So if Texas is shaded as a place where a particular food grows, that food very well may not grow where I live. In other words, the maps could be better, especially in geographically large states, by being made to show different zones where particular things grow rather than the whole state. In any event, I am very happy to have the book because I think there is a very real possibility that a time will come when I need to find food to provide needed sustenance from plants that grow in the wild.Read full review
