Player plays and records both DVD and VHS. I needed to replace an old VHS player since I have an extensive library of them, and this was a good choice for my needs, which is pretty much viewing DVDs and VHS tapes. Great picture on both (I have an HDTV). I haven't used the record function on either formats (DVD/VHS)so can't vouch for how well that function works. It was easy to set up and the remote is pretty user-friendly...however, I'm pretty good with electronics, so... Currently, the only thing I wish it had was a speed rewind for the VHS tapes when finished viewing.
While not blu-ray capable during either the playback or record to DVD process, the D-KVR20 will upconvert DVDs to 1080p via the HDMI output. The HDMI cable is even included! Everything else about this unit is way above average as well. Want to dub from VHS to DVD, put the tape in, put the DVD in and push a button. Want to dub from DVD to VHS, put the DVD in, put the tape in and push a button. Want to capture shows from cable, satellite or off-air? Set up to 12 timers a year ahead of time and make certain you load a blank DVD or tape. [NOTE: If you record to DVD additional steps are required to name and finalize so it can be played in other equipment.] The DVD recorder supports recording and playback of DVD±R and DVD±RW discs, and VHS tapes, as well as playback of MP3, WMA, JPEG and DivX files from DVD. Like any piece of electronic equipment not manufactured in the United States, the final translation of the instruction set can be somewhat confusing. This is especially true when it comes to "finalizing" a DVD so it can be played in a unit other than the D-KVR20, as the finalization process is neither intuitive or well instructed in what substitutes for a manual. Setup and connection is simple. Connectivity includes: - HDMI out jack (DVD only) - cable included - Audio out jacks (DVD/VCR) - cable included - Video out jacks (DVD/VCR) - cable included - Video in jack (DVD/VCR) - Audio in jacks (DVD/VCR) - S-Video in jack (DVD/VCR) - Component video out jacks (DVD only) - S-Video out jack (DVD only) - Audio out jacks (DVD only) - Coaxial digital audio out jack (DVD only) - Audio/Video input jacks (on front) - DV input jack (on front) Like any other peice of equipment, making good recordings, properly finalizing and becoming proficient will require some practice. DVDs are cheap, and the ability to archive those old VHS tapes; to share holidays, partys, gatherings and historical events with friends and family is absolutely priceless. Having grown up with 8mm film, I celebrated the introduction of BETA and VHS tapes - now, with the ability to archive and easily copy those tapes to DVD there's simply no reason to have them gathering dust in a corner. [NOTE: This unit plays and records only VHS tapes. The ability to archive and copy BETA, or any format other than VHS tapes, will require additional equipment.] Overall, the Toshiba D-KVR20 appears to be well manufactured and is an excellent value for the cost.Read full review
Hi, I only just received this recorder and set it up. Loaded with features easy to understand with all the inputs and outputs that the average homeowner would need. I choose the refurbished model because of price and excellent luck in the past with purchases of FACTORY refurbished items of all kinds. Also refurbished items are often better than new because any inherent problems with the device have been corrected.
Great tech support for hooking up equipment, as directions are not specific. Wish I knew that this model did not have a tuner. You must be either be watching the channel you are recording, or have your cable box on that channel. Makes it impossible to watch one program on one channel and record one on another. Only good for recording while you are away. The picture is also not as clear on recording as watching in person.
Delivery was in a matter of three days much faster than I expected. This product arrived in great shape and was very easy to use. We transfered VHS tapes of the family to DVD and they turned out great and everyone was quite pleased. I would reccommened this DVD/ VHS player recorder to all. Thanks!
