About this product

Product Information

In the tradition of DIE HARD and PREDATOR, director John McTiernan presents audiences with yet another techno thriller: THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Sean Connery plays Captain Marko Ramius, a dissatisfied Russian commander who navigates his submarine towards America in an attempt to defect. Soviet intelligence claims that Ramius is a warmonger and that he plans to launch nuclear missiles at the United States. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), an iconoclastic CIA agent, believes otherwise: American spies have determined that the submarine is powered by a stealth engine. In order to save the "caterpillar drive" and avoid a nuclear incident, Agent Ryan must board the Red October and assist Captain Ramius in its navigation to U.S. waters. Both murky and captivating, the underwater visual and sound effects are reminiscent of DAS BOOT. Once again director McTiernan produces a winning film with a jagged plot, a well acted script, and plenty of explosions.

    An excellent submarine drama

An excellent, even if slightly dated, submarine drama. The book it was based on - by Tom Clancy - was riveting and the movie was an excellent adaptation of the book. Baldwin and Connery were perfectly cast for their roles. A must-see for anyone interested in submarine movies - and anyone else.

  • I would have liked to have seen Montana

I love submarine movies and The Hunt for Red October ranks at the top of my list. It also ranks Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin (one of his best and least annoying roles) are a great duo in this film. If less instantly sympathetic than Harrison Ford (who plays Jack Ryan in two other Clancy film adaptations), Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. The story follows the defection of Connery's character with the Red October - a new, almost silent Soviet submarine that runs on a caterpillar propulsion system. He and the other officers plan the defection. Jack Ryan is a Naval historian/CIA analyst who accurately predicts where the Red October is headed. ...

  • Great Story Well Presented On DVD

The Hunt for Red October remains, after 20 years, among the very best Cold War drama adventures Hollywood ever produced. When it was first released I was working as an intelligence assistant with high clearances in one of the US agencies that played a prominent role in Cold War activities and in determining what the Soviet Union would deploy against the West next. So professional interests as well as being entertained drove me to see the movie. I wasn't disappointed then or now, though I was startled out of my seat at least once when the film accurately portrayed topics which I expected would have remained under top secret code word protection. Although I had been enjoying a VHS tape copy, I was interested in the DVD version of Red October because of the special features. I wanted to know ...

  • A fun ride

Tom Clancy's first novel, made into the first Tom Clancy movie. It's fun to think what Harrison Ford could have brought to the role if he had played Jack Ryan this first time out, but I have to admit that the much-and-rightly-despised Alec Baldwin did a good job portraying the CIA analyst swept up by events after a Soviet boomer captain decides to defect. Trimming the novel for the big screen left some gaping plot holes to ignore (the crew really believed the Bear bomber dropped a nuke on them just for training?) but these can be ignored in the face of strong, enjoyable performances by Sean Connery as the Soviet skipper, Scott Glenn as CDR Mancuso of the USS Dallas, and a young Courtney Vance as Petty Officer Jones. Along with "Red Tide", "Das Boot", and "The Enemy Below", "The Hunt for ...

  • A stunner

This is, I believe, the one that jump started Tom Clancy's career. IT's an edge of your seat, and I do mean the very edge---thriller that involves a defecting Russian sub and her skipper who had an axe to grind with his government. There isn't a dull moment, the characters are superb and it is one you will watch over and over. ONe of the things that makes Clancy's works so good is that he has taken the time to do his homework in the techie stuff that pops up in his works. You feel you are right there, in the hands of a man who knows subs and consequently, knows what he is talking about. A superb read, as far as the book goes, and a great and gripping dvd. You won't regret getting this one.
