About this product

Product Information

Grades 3-4: Beginning Standards-based critical thinking activities develop the analysis, synthesis, and vocabulary skills children need for exceptional reading comprehension. The activities are especially effective at helping children understand more challenging reading concepts such as drawing interferences, making conclusions, determining cause-and-effect, and using context clues to define vocabulary. Students read and analyze short literature passages and stories that include fiction and nonfiction genres. Then they answer multiple-choice and short-response questions, citing sentence evidence to support their answers."

  • Logic, deductive reasoning, scientific reasoning...EXCELLENT!

We've used Reading Detective Beginning and A1. My boys enjoy most of the literature choices, and we end up getting the book to read. This has been a great springboard for life reasoning skills. I can now help him see when he's drawing an inference, jumping to a conclusion, or lacking evidence in his daily life. Excellent logic, good examples, answer key in the back with explanations...so happy!

  • pretty good, but needs work

Overall, pretty good, but some of the questions need a good editor. One question asked the student to identify two sentences, but the answer key indicated only one sentence, and really, there was only one sentence that fit the question. Errors of this sort should never exist in a book designed to encourage intuitive reading. Other than that, this book does help children read more deeply and intuit the whole story.

  • Very good book for kids to practice reading skills

  • Recommended by teacher

The book was recommended by my child's third grade reading teacher to improve her reading comprehension. Haven't used thebook yet, but plan to use it in connection with a tutor.
