Seller Notes: “This remainder $100 Banknote from the Citizens Bank of Louisiana at New Orleans (issuer of the ... “This remainder $100 Banknote from the Citizens Bank of Louisiana at New Orleans (issuer of the famous "DIX" note) is graded by PCGS Currency at Gem New 66 PPQ. This obsolete Louisiana banknote is famously referred to as the "Christopher Columbus note," see the image on the bright orange-red reverse side of the note; but it is also well-known that when making the engraving of "Columbus" there was no authenticated portrait of him, and that other renaissance-era men who had sat for portrait paintings were searched for someone who could be said to have a good likeness of Columbus based on contemporary verbal descriptions of him. In fact, the portrait used is a nearly exact copy of the 1524 painted portrait of Galeazzo Sanvitale, and italian noble, painted by a fairly prolific Italian portraitist named Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola (1503-1540). The obverse of this note also features interesting portraits: Andrew Jackson, George Washington, and several female allegorical figures.”
