Back in 2001, the ABC network launched a new half hour series called "The Job" which starred comic Denis Leary(TV's Rescue Me, The Thomas Crown Affair)as a New York City Police Detective. The series focuses on Mike McNeil(Leary)and his fellow detectives(played by comic Lenny Clarke, Diane Farr, Bill Nunn, John Ortiz, Julian Acosta & Adam Ferrara)who not only solve cases but also get themselves involved or stuck in crazy situations, that often end with hilarious results. The series also dealt with Mike's life outside of work - where we learn that Mike is not only married with a kid but also has a girlfriend on the side and is dealing with numerous addictions(such as pill popping, smoking & drinking). After a trial run in 2001, ABC renewed the series for a 2nd season - and the laughs just kept coming. Unfortunately, ABC ended up canceling the series after just 19 episodes and leaving the series with a major cliffhanger, never to be solved, in episode 19 due to the cancellation. Even though the series was praised by critics before its debut, throughout its run and after its cancellation - it wasn't enough to make ABC reconsider this awful decision they made. The complete series was released on dvd in a 4-disc set that includes all 19 episodes from both seasons as well as extras like: Behind the Scenes footage, Cast Interviews, Promos, and an interview with both Denis Leary & producer Peter Tolan. Although many people would say Leary's current series "Rescue Me" on FX is the better show I'd have to disagree with them and fully recommend "The Job" to all those who haven't seen it - who ever thought a cop show could be this damn funny, definitely check out this show or make a blind buy thats exactly how good it is. A GREAT boxed DVD set of a short-lived ABC show. I had already seen Denis Learys' hilarious stand-up routine called "No cure for Cancer", so I knew he was funny. When "The Job" found its' way to Abc I was most enthused. But the way way they shceduled it and the bouncing of days and time slots, it never really caught on. Luckily it evolved into "rescuse me' on FX with many of the the same players, but in a fire dept setting as opposed to a cop setting. It also came out after the the 9-11 tragedy, which gave Leary added incentive to make for great TV viewing, also given the lack of restraint on FX as opposed to ABC. However, if you want to get some great laughs from a show that had to fit it all in in 22 minutes, you will not be disapointed with this excellent, and may I add very reasonably priced box DVD set of every episode of "The Job". It is one of those summer replacement shows that slipped under the radar of TV viewers when there is so much other stuff to do in the nice weather as oppossed to watching TV. This is one box set that would be a worthy addition to anyones' collection to view when you need some laughs, and dont really need to spend alot of time to devote to it. After all, one episode is really only 22 minutes long, and most of them pack an hours' worth of humor into a rather constrained time-frame. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I was really glad to see that they put this brilliant television series (in its entirety) on DVD. This is probably the best network series ever. It probably would have lasted longer than it did had it not been on a network and hampered by their censors. As it was, however, it stands as one of the funniest and most original series of all time. A lot of cop shows claim realism, but as I have known several cops in my lifetime, I feel that this show truly comes the closest to portraying real-life cops. This show entertains in a number of ways, with humor, drama, action and personal issues all seamlessly intertwined, in much the same way that the creators' later, and equally brilliant, show Rescue Me (which is about firefighters) does. Do yourself a very big favor and pick this up, whether it has been a while since you saw it on TV, or if you have never seen it before. You will not regret it.Read full review
Deserved to be as successful as Rescue Me. Originally aired on regular TV and only 30 minute episodes. Very accurate to reall life police sense of humor. Funny as hell. Dennis Leary is a mess.

It is funny and more than a little silly in parts. Denis Leary is a stand up comic in real life and it leaks through in this series, If You watch "Rescue Me", you will see a continuation of these antics. Probably the best character in the series is the female cop. She is a breath of stability amidst all of the stupid things her male counterparts do. Leary's character is completely without any moral compass. His girlfriend's request(demand) to meet her unbelievable parents is off the map for credibility. It is somewhat easy to see why there was no second season. Rent the DVD and you be the critic.
