Dark Savior is an action role-playing game from the development team behind 1993's Landstalker on Genesis. The futuristic storyline revolves around a bounty hunter named Garian in a race to recapture a murderous prisoner known as Bilan. In an interesting twist, Garian's encounter with Bilan will influence the rest of the game's events and ultimate outcome. As in Landstalker, the action in Dark Savior is viewed from an isometric perspective as the protagonist solves an assortment of puzzles and leaps across platforms to traverse dangerous, trap-filled terrain. Enemy encounters are structured like traditional fighting games, with best-of-three matches against a single opponent. Garian will also be able to visit cities to converse with other characters, purchase equipment, and receive quests.

Great Action RPG for the Saturn.
I only started playing this yesterday but I bought it because it was relatively cheap. From the few hours I have spent playing it, the story goes like this: You play the role of Garian, a notorious bounty hunter given the task of escorting an equally notorious body-snatching monster known as Bilan to Jailor's island aboard a huge prison transport ship. Bilan is sentenced to execution by carbon freeze, but the monster escapes en route killing nearly everyone on the ship. You awaken from a nightmare by alarm sirens during the carnage into a reality just as nightmarish. Your companion Jack who is a talking bird, oddly enough, also awakens from the same dream in which Bilan escaped. And now, it seems events are repeating themselves. In your inventory you find a mysterious blue rose ... I only started playing this yesterday but I bought it because it was relatively cheap. Hunting Bilan becomes your primary concern, however, so you start following the trail of corpses. Dark Savior is separated into five parallel stories. You select one depending on how quickly you get to the captain's cabin on board the ill-fated prison transport ship. It seems to be an RPG with a few interesting elements like 1-on-1 fighting games. Maybe they were going for action-RPG that we would find better executed in later games instead of turn-based which is incorporated into this game also. But comparing the two would be apples and oranges. The graphics have a certain quality that while looking dated (naturally) is really appealing and if retro ever comes back in a bigger than it has of recent, they could re-do this game in HD for XBLA in the same vein of Guardian Heroes or Radiant Silvergun and it would still be very entertaining. You will find better RPG's on the Saturn but for what they were trying here, it does succeed on many levels and is very enjoyable (well, for as much as I have played). Your character handles well and it is not linear (sort of) as you do you have 5 stories to play but each of those stories are linear. I only give this 4 stars because there are other better games that I would give 5 stars. And I need to show that while there aren't many faults that I can point at this early stage, there are simply better games even if the comparisons aren't really fair. Highly Recommended.

Rarely would I recommend paying so much money for a title but this has quickly become one of my all time favorites. The gameplay is similar to Climax's earlier title on the Sega Genesis, Landstalker, but so much more. The gameplay is fun and unique mixing action rpg elements with a fighting game that surprisingly works. The graphics are also uniquely beautiful being the closest I can think of of a 2d game in 3d if that makes any sense. The music is very catchy too. The story at first may seem hit and miss but gets extra layers of depth when you discover the parallel stories of the game (5 of them if I recall correctly.) To summarize this is, in my opinion, the reason to own a Saturn and is an excellent game for your collection.Rarely would I recommend paying so much money for a title but this has quickly become one of my all time favorites. The spiritual successor to Land stalker from the now defunct Climax entertainment. This game features 2D sprite characters and 3D backgrounds, a technique they used a lot on the Saturn and something I'm particularly fond of. you play as a bounty hunter named Garian accompanied by your bird companion Jack on a quest to capture an the escaped convict that slaughtered everyone on board the tanker that was taking him and his fellow prisoners to an island prison. The game features lots of platforming and some simple puzzle solving. There are a few negatives: there is a ton of slow down,boss battles add variety, unfortunately their very shallow.
