First let me say that my opinion is currupted having seen the movie prior to reading the book. I have to say that I enjoyed the movie better as it gave a darker view of the story and the acting was outstanding. Without giving any spoilers, I will say that the book varies somewhat from the movie and does provide a few more answers to questions that I had after watching it. There was a balance of characters that had more of a roll in the book but less or not at all in the movie. The book stayed true to the main characters overall but I thought the book made Anton's character seem a bit more human (if thats possible) than the movies depiction of him being this evil, almost ghost of a man. I was not crazy about the authors style of writing when he was giving descriptions of things or actions of the characters but enjoyed the vocabulary used by all as I have lived in the southwest and I am also a lawman which the latter made me able to relate to Sheriff Bell...I kind of feel the same way he does sometimes. Anyway, I can go on and on but will say that I probably would have given 4 stars if I had not been spoiled by the Cohen Brothers film.(I'm a big fan of thiers) That being said, if you can do so, read the book first then definitely see the movie. Cormac McCarthy is an incredible author. His command of the English language is awsome. I am not a particular fan of novels of the Old West, but McCarthy could make his grocery list entertaining. He is discriptive in the extreme and his vocaublary is enormous. His tales are most often tragic and they just seem to stop rather than end. If you want a story with a happy ending, skip his books. If you like a book where the author is able give your a vivid mental image of the setting and deep insight into the characters, you will not find a better writter. I have now read everthing he has published and place him among my favorite authors.
love all cormac mccarthy. the setting is more contemporary than the border trilogy but is still an intense good read. not as great as blood meridian however, which is one the best books i've ever read.

beautifully written, must read. it is the basis for the recent Coen Bros oscar winning film of the same name. as one would expect, it provides signifiantly deeper views into the rich characters introduced to us by that film. ...and of course of the main character; rural Texas.

For my money, "No Country For Old Men" is Cormac McCarthy's best book to date. Though I liked his vivid prose in his "border trilogy" books, and I thought "The Road" was gripping and touching, this book starts out at a run, keeps you on the edge of your seat, and ends with a bang. If you have seen the movie and liked it, but have not read the book, trust me, you will love the book.
I bought the book as a gift for my husband. He saw and loved the movie, and he liked the book. I only watched part of the movie, it didn't interest me. I haven't read the book yet, but will probably one day give it a try. I find that usually the book is better then the movie.
