About this product

Product Information

THE BOOK BEHIND THE SECOND SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES, AN ORIGINAL SERIES NOW ON HBO. George R. R. Martin, a writer of unsurpassed vision, power, and imagination, has created a landmark of fantasy fiction. In his widely acclaimed A Game of Thrones, he introduced us to an extraordinary world of wonder, intrigue, and adventure. Now, in the eagerly awaited second volume in this epic saga, he once again proves himself a master myth-maker, setting a standard against which all other fantasy novels will be measured for years to come. Time is out of joint. The summer of peace and plenty, ten years long, is drawing to a close, and the harsh, chill winter approaches like an angry beast. Two great leaders--Lord Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon--who held sway over an age of enforced peace are dead . . . victims of royal treachery. Now, from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns, as pretenders to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms prepare to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war. As a prophecy of doom cuts across the sky--a comet the color of blood and flame--six factions struggle for control of a divided land. Eddard's son Robb has declared himself King in the North. In the south, Joffrey, the heir apparent, rules in name only, victim of the scheming courtiers who teem over King's Landing. Robert's two brothers each seek their own dominion, while a disfavored house turns once more to conquest. And a continent away, an exiled queen, the Mother of Dragons, risks everything to lead her precious brood across a hard hot desert to win back the crown that is rightfully hers. A Clash of Kings transports us into a magnificent, forgotten land of revelry and revenge, wizardry and warfare. It is a tale in which maidens cavort with madmen, brother plots against brother, and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, the price of glory may be measured in blood. And the spoils of victory may just go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel . . . and the coldest hearts. For when rulers clash, all of the land feels the tremors. Audacious, inventive, brilliantly imagined, A Clash of Kings is a novel of dazzling beauty and boundless enchantment--a tale of pure excitement you will never forget.

Reviews
"The second novel of Martin's titanic Ice and Fire Saga [is]...a truly epic fantasy set in a world bedecked with 8000 years of history, beset by an imminent winter that will last ten years and bedazzled by swords and spells wielded to devastating effect....Here, he provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites."-Publishers Weekly, starred review, "Martin amply fulfills the first volume's promise and continues what seems destined to be one of the best fantasy series ever written." -- The Denver Post "A truly epic fantasy set in a world bedecked with 8,000 years of history, beset by an imminent winter that will last ten years and bedazzled by swords and spells wielded to devastating effect." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review "High fantasy with a vengeance." -- The San Diego Union-Tribune "Rivals T. H. White's The Once and Future King. " -- The Des Moines Registe r "So complex, fascinating and well-rendered, readers will almost certainly be hooked by the whole series." -- The Oregonian "The richness of this invented world and its cultures lends Mr. Martin's novels the feeling of medieval history rather than fiction--except, of course, that he knows how to entertain." -- The Dallas Morning News, "The second novel of Martin's titanic Ice and Fire Saga [is]...a truly epic fantasy set in a world bedecked with 8000 years of history, beset by an imminent winter that will last ten years and bedazzled by swords and spells wielded to devastating effect....Here, he provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites."- Publishers Weekly , starred review, "The second novel of Martin's titanic Ice and Fire Saga [is]...a truly epic fantasy set in a world bedecked with 8000 years of history, beset by an imminent winter that will last ten years and bedazzled by swords and spells wielded to devastating effect....Here, he provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites." --Publishers Weekley, starred review Praise for A Game Of Thrones: "Grabs hold and won't let go. A Song of Ice and Fire continues with the excellent "A Clash of Kings"

George R. R. Martin's fantasy saga "A Song of Ice and Fire" started triumphantly with "A Game of Thrones". Now in book 2, "A Clash of Kings", this talented storyteller builds upon the first story with another rousing good tale. The world he has created, Westeros, Essos, et. al., is a fascinating milieu of lands that take on a personality of their own. The characters are so well-defined, they feel amazingly real. The story is rich and engrossing. Martin is a master at creating believable and essential dialog. And his writing style is a pure joy to millions of readers. Winter may be coming, but this book will put summer in your heart!

    Okay

Not bad for the price but the shipping was very slow and went out of state twice. The book was the old version so it also didn’t match my others. Kind of disappointed but can’t give an awful review because it is still the book, same content. Just wish the description and picture would’ve matched the version.

  • Clash of Kings

A CLASH OF KINGS BY GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: A Clash of Kings is the second in the ongoing "Song of Ice and Fire" series, sequel to A Game of Thrones, and the series continues to be entertaining and interesting, one of my favorite ongoing fantasy series. What makes it different from other fantasy series is that Martin, instead of using chapter numbers and having everything be specifically chronological, has about five to ten characters whose heads you are in. So you can be immediately whisked away to another battle, another land, another family feud by the turn of the page. Plus Martin isn't afraid of killing of characters, which can be horrible if one gets really attached to certain characters, but I find it admirable that he has the bravely to do this. I think it isn't done enough in ...

  • Clash of Kings HCDJ

The reason I bought this book is that when I read a book, I add it to my "library" and then I look for a first edition hard cover with dust jacket. I have all 85+ Star Wars novels and they are all first edition. You could say I am a collector but only of books that I really enjoy and I really get into this series. The author gives his story line a lot of twists and unexpected turns. Just when you thnik you have a hero figured out he changes it so it can't happen. I can't say much about the author himself though. His readers are waiting for about at least 7 years for him to finish this story line up. I will get the last book in this series but won't get any more by him. He seems to be more involved in other pursuits and, it seems to me, isn't too worried about this readers. Great story, ...
