  • beware vampire and witch lovers - none of that here

I gave this an average rating because there is nothing supernatural in this book. The book was dull and I had a hard time finishing it. The plot is about non-slave ''peoples of color'' that are living in New Orleans at the time of slavery. They look down on the slaves and feel sorry for them. As the book progresses they realize that they are also slave but just a slightly different kind of slave. The book is depressing. The only good thing about the book is that there are vivid descriptions of things that are long gone that are interesting to picture in your mind from what they were like hundreds of years ago.

  • Worth the read!

Off topic from her better known vampire, witch and werewolf novels, this book does not disappoint. Based in New Orleans before the civil war, when “quadroons” had their own class system, Rice describes the lives and struggles of many people of all colors. Never one to skimp on imagery and in-depth descriptions, the reader is immersed into the world of the characters lead to empathize with an entire cast.

  • dull dull dull - nothing interestng in these pages

This book is very long and very dull. If it had been the first book Rice wrote she would have never gotten a chance to write another one.
