Typical "iii Pus" but zero scratches on this one!!
I have a few of these for various projects around the house and also use one on my motorcycle with the velcro strip. I did receive this and the screen showed "low memory battery" .. no biggy - just install 4 new AA batteries, power it off, and let it sit overnight. Whamo! Worked for a few days. Then, I couldn't get it to come on -- again, no biggy as I have the cigarette lighter cable that came with a boxes set. Works again -- however, I can no longer use it just on battery power -- it is one of the major flaws the "iii Plus" has had with each one I owned. I had sent one of my others in to Garmin and they replaced the internal battery, but they no longer perform the service. And, I don't lose saved items, so this one isn't due to that. Good for Sailboat Race Management
I bought this specifically to be able to mark a point and then return it with a bearing and distance. For that it has worked very well but there were some changes needed on the display. The manual helped with that. For the price and for my use it was a value. I'm reluctant to rate it with stars because while it is good for what I bought it for, another buyer with a different expectations may not find it useful. The reserection of a good companion on long, lonely drives.
First of all, my rating of this device is based upon my experience with this device, only. Compared to today's GPS devices, this is archaeic technology and would rate ZERO STARS in a side-by-side test. I have used a GPS III for over a decade and with 9,300+ hours of use, the display was becoming unreadable (burning out). However, if you make repetative long trips, driving alone as I do, it makes a wonderful 'trip monitor'. Since this model required you to create routes on your PC and then download them onto the device, it allows you to set way-points of your choosing between your start and destination. This device then displays the distance and ETA to each waypoint along your route. I find that this seems to make the long trips seem less lengthly, timewise. The intent of my purchase ... First of all, my rating of this device is based upon my experience with this device, only. Absolutely well more of a GPS system than I ever expected I could own.
I am very new to the handled GPS devices, I have the typical car type and the ones I have are tom Tom and it works very well , but as for using it on foot it's not worth the effort, so it sent me looking for something I could afford or at least purchase and get what I pay for ,and when looking over amazo and ebay and etc ,do many if what is offers runs between 90 and 300 to even get close to a multi use GPS and this dilemma led me to Garmin products as they typically have a good name for themself. I was reading very old amazon post on GPS and found the Garmin gps III had a super review status for 4,s and 5,s ,around 90 percent overall approval where features and ease if use and durable ,water resistant and then the battery consumption is very friendly toward usage.I personally use the ... I was reading very old amazon post on GPS and found the Garmin gps III had a super review status for 4,s and 5,s ,around 90 percent overall approval where features and ease if use and durable ,water resistant and then the battery consumption is very friendly toward usage.I personally use the eneloop whit batts ,becasue they are long lasting and they fit in the compartment easier than some of the other nicads I was trying.This is what I think after owning it for just about a day , it's very simple to read, the display it has mass amount of awesome tricks to use,it's faily easy to pack around ,it does cover ground terrain and roads ,and many public places that could leed to saftey,the marking your current spot with the one button command I will nevr be lost form my car or anyplace I really need to get back to !I am so incredibly shocked at how an item that was produced in or around 1999 was so more advanced ,than I had thught possible.the average retail on the item was abut 400 dollars so ,with me buying a near perfect gps with age but no signs of use,is a steal I paid about 50 bucks and that's delivered so ' there is no way I could ever spend 50 bucks on a new updated item ,and get one tenth of the uses,It's compass is superbly accurate, the back lite works very nicely at dark and the screen is adjustable for contrast and brightness, it is also possible to buy inusrance for the used item and they gruaentte to fix the god if needed or provide one that has the equally amount if options ,In closing I'm just going to say I don't think for the money I could possibly buy a better made product ,there is one that is called a Garmin GPS street that seems very well made and options of all sorts but it also makes it less user friendly as far as packing a gps in hand while roaming around the city or in the sticks ' I have been lost in Chicago at 2am and was terrified I'd have no busses coming by, so the next visit there I will not get lost dowtown or out in the burbs !plus I'm headed to Europe lasted this year and amd exited to think I can roam there and have some clue of whre I wil bee and not just guessing ,I hope this helps ,someone.

Garmin should have never stopped making these
I had owned and used extensively one of these in the past, found it very handy as a back up for the electronics in my boat, made the mistake of leaving batteries in it over the winter, corrosion destroyed it , I had difficulty finding anything comparable and was pleased to find this one , lucky that the case, dash mount and powercord i had were still quite useable as this did not include them. Unit seems to be in good condition , I have programmed the waypoints I have gathered over the years and am anxious to use it for navigation I had owned and used extensively one of these in the past, found it very handy as a back up for the electronics in my boat, made the mistake of leaving batteries in it over the winter, corrosion destroyed it , I had difficulty finding anything comparable and was pleased to find this one , lucky that the case, dash mount and powercord i had were still quite useable as this did not include them.
