Searching for the actual Trojan War
Rating the characters? Hector, Agamemnon, Achilles, Helen of Troy? This is actually an entertaining yet scholarly attempt to lay out everything that is known about the Trojan War and whether it really happened. Answer: no one knows for sure, it could just be myth, but there is a lot of evidence that says it could have happened, maybe even somewhat like Homer said. How come we don't know? No written Trojan language has ever been found, and Mycenaean Greek records are strictly book keeping records (Real men or "writers" in Trojan-Greek times didn't write things out -- they memorized them -- writing was for accountants. Homer was finally written down hundreds of years after the best guess for the date of the war. Michael Wood, the narrator is an actual ancient history scholar (though his specific expertise is in Anglo-Saxon history). He lays out all the theories, shows all the physical evidence, and explains it for the viewer in everyday English. In the final episode, he expresses his own opinion, but you are free to draw your own conclusion with the evidence presented. This is the ultimate documentary series on the Trojan War and its many characters. Michael Wood is a most engaging host and story teller and is expert on the period.
