Great derailleur with one caveat
Along with the XT version, which has just about the identical design, one of the few RDs that can handle a 11-36T cassette paired with a MTB crankset. Self contained B-pivot system doesn't rely on hanger stop so has wide range of adjustment. Smooth shifting. Only little problem and reason this doesn't get five stars is that the way the cable stop is angled leaves little room for compatibility with different cabling. Was lucky I could just bend the last run of housing on my bike enough to come in fairly straight but might not work so well on frames with tighter routing — there's not always enough room to mount a diverter (which had come pre-installed with my earlier XT model). Otherwise the metalic black finish is real snazzy and I find the whole thing more attractive than the XT, which ... Tricky setting up the derailleur cable on 9-speed
The designed routing for the derailleur cable appears to be below the clamp screw, because that is where the plate extends out and there is a groove. However, that produced the wrong travel with respect to my Shimano 9 speed STI shifters and Shimano 11-34 9 speed road cassette - too much travel. By routing above the screw, the angle is changed such that the travel changes to the correct amount, but the cable is not grasped with as much safety margin as it is kind of ad hoc - I turned the attached plate upside down, rotated 180 degrees, and somehow got it to work. This was unexpected because I had no such trouble with a previous Shimano Deore XT derailleur (which was more expensive).The designed routing for the derailleur cable appears to be below the clamp screw, because that is where the plate extends out and there is a groove. Smooth Shifting Mega 9 Compatible
Our 2003 Specialized Epic came with a medium cage Mega 9 and after long years of service the reflex spring finally weakened. The Shadow RD-M592 was listed by Shimano Tech Docs to be compatible. I pulled the trigger and purchased it and when it arrived I installed it. The Shadow tucks a bit further back and uses a direct pull instead of the reach around leverage, which shortened up the cable jacket necessary and eliminated the need for a large cable loop. It works like a 1:1 SRAM X9 sweet with no lag. Good upgrade from a standard rear deraileur
The Shadow design is a nice upgrade for the Mega-9 drivetrain from Shimano. It keeps the rear derailleur out of harm's way and the stronger tension spring reduces chain slap over bumps. It has a light shifting action and the dusky metal gray color looks terrific. I put this on a Chromoly Origin8 CX700 "Monster Cross" build that is also a rigid 29er style bike that can take up to a 29x2.1" tire. The RD-M592 is a really nice derailleur at an affordable price point. It weighs on average 286 grams. Mine came in at 284.9g on my digital scale. I paired it with an XT FD-M771 front derailleur and some Deore SL-M510 3x9 speed shifters. the combo works perfectly once set up and indexed.The Shadow design is a nice upgrade for the Mega-9 drivetrain from Shimano. Great Derailleur But......
Great Shimano quality. Tucks in nicely by the cassette, tighter than other Shimano derailleurs I've had and seems less vulnerable to damage. BUT it doesn't come with a barrel adjuster so you must install an inline cable adjuster. Not a deal breaker just be sure to order one when you order this product so your bikes not down another week while you're waiting for parts.
