About this product

Product Information

In a crumbling, isolated house at the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas lives an embittered judge who wants only to retire in peace, when his orphaned granddaughter, Sai, arrives on his doorstep. The judge's cook watches over her distractedly, for his thoughts are often on his son, Biju, who is hopscotching from one gritty New York restaurant to another. Kiran Desai's brilliant novel, published to huge acclaim, is a story of joy and despair. Her characters face numerous choices that majestically illuminate the consequences of colonialism as it collides with the modern world.

  • Very Good Book!

    1. Author: Kiran Desai 2. Name of Book: The Inheritance of Loss, published in 2006 and winner of the Man Booker Prize 3. Brief Synopsis of the book: The main premise of the novel is the struggle of a third world country and the division between poor and wealthy. Technology has been introduced but lakes the resources to keep the technology working properly. The novel takes place in India with a retired Indian judge, raising his grand daughter. The novel portrays each persons views and the huge struggle of living in a country that doesn’t have a solid government. It shows how most of the Indian people want to get to American and the monstrous struggles of getting a visa to the states. Thinking that once they get there everything will be fine. • BOOK NEVER ARRIVED VIA HALF.COM (now 40 days out)

I read the book, because I finally went out to buy it at retail after it never arrived via Half-com's ANYBOOK vendor. The book was excellent, though somewhat flawed. Desai (this daughter of Anita Desai) is a very promising author nonetheless. But dealing with Half.com and its vendors has been a disaster: I am having a very difficult time getting a credit from them. We're talking about an $11.88 purchase, and they don't seem to want to acknowledge that (now six weeks out) it still will not arrive! Many emails exchanged over this, and still no credit.

  • A Book Every Person Should Read

After reading this book I felt as if I should get out more. It seems that in everyday life we really don't see what is going on in the grand scheme of things in the world. This book left me moved in a way that no other book has. I felt the pain of each indiviual in this story, leaving me in shock at the end of the novel. I feel every learned individual should do themselves a favor and read this treasure of a story. This book changed the way I view world events and the people that i will never come in contact with.

  • The Inheritance of Loss

I read this book for one of my college Literature classes. The book is an excellent example of real life in India through the 1960s. The book gives real life details about how life perspired in India, how Western culture affected the social classes of India. The book however, has difficulty keeping the readers attention at times, and sometimes explains beyond the story and loses sight of the plot.

  • Tough read

The book is difficult to read, it is about the Indian culture with many nuiances that I did not understand. It is also a very gloomy story overall.
