I bought this GBA cartridge b/c I used to play both of these games when they were still at the arcade. It's easy to forget how simple these games are. I still play old games and old systems, but I have to say I had really forgotten how Rampart lacked much strategy at all. It's a little harder to see than I remember as well, though I do have a backlit GBA. Gauntlet fares better. For one, there are two basic classes of characters to play from, and when I was putting quarters in a an arcade, I stuck to the one I knew to minimize cash losses. Now that it doesn't matter, it has been fun to try all of the four characters (two throw weapons, two fight hand to hand). The styles do make a difference. Also, there are quite a few types of enemies, and so different strategies are needed to get deep into the dungeon. When different enemy types and dungeon designs are mixed is where the true fun begins. Overall, I'd give Rampart a 2/5, and Gauntlet a 4.5/5. The only reason I didn't give the average a 4 is because the GBA cartridge doesn't have a battery backup. You can enter your name on the 'top score' board, but when you turn the GBA off, it's erased. If you truly want to compare scores you'll have to write them down - not acceptable when so many other GBA games have battery backup.Read full review
I bought this game as I have always loved Rampart, I really don't know anything about Gauntlet. The game is generally the same game I remember fondly but with a few weird issues. For one, even though the instructions claim that grunts will die if you surround them with walls, and this has always been true on other versions I play, they don't die and can attack a surrounded castle. Also, building the castle has some lag. Better than no rampart at all but based on some further reviews I have read, I am going to try the older gameboy color version to see if it plays more true to the classic game.
A great cartridge that allows me to play 2 of my favorite old games that I use to play when I was a kid. It brings back alot of happy memories.
Classic arcade and NES games,just like i remember them.Gauntlet is more difficult with just 1 player on the GBA.Great games for the ones who remember the great days of gaming!
Game reminds me of when I was in high school, easy to play. Wish you could save the game so you can continue.
