I've been using Daiwa Goldcast reels for decades and recommend the Goldcasts for light to medium freshwater use. The Goldcast reels haven't changed since the 1980's. So the reels don't have as many ball bearings and the handles don't feel as smooth as say, the Zebco Omegas. But I own both brands of spincast reels, and my Zebco Omegas are collecting dust while the Daiwa Goldcast reels get used weekly. Unlike the Zebco Omega reels, Daiwa Goldcast reels feature rotating line pick-up pins for less line wear and abrasion. Also, the Daiwas have noticeably smoother drag systems than all other spincast reels that I've used. So if you hook an occasional outsized catfish while trolling for crappie, with the Daiwa Goldcast reel's smooth drag and rotating line pickup pin, you stand a decent chance of landing the big fish. Both Daiwa Goldcast and Zebco Omega reels feature oscillating spools, so they cast farther than competing spincast reels. But the Daiwa's oscillating spool has proven more reliable for me (I had to return two new Omegas that didn't oscillate correctly). Finally, all of the spincast reels that I've ever purchased came with inexpensive, low quality line from the factory.
