The S90es is essentially a MOTIF minus sampling. Some of the great sounds include acoustic pianos, Wurlitzer electric pianos, several of the B3 sounds most often used in rock (888, Green Eyed Lady with 3rd harmonic percussion, full organ, . . . ), "Jump", thick strings that don't sound grainy, marimba and vibes, numerous analog synths, and on and on. . . Programming is highly tweakable and the Master Mode is great to simplify patch changes in live situations. The sounds are SO big that I cut some low frequencies with a bass eq pedal unless I'm playing alone (which is a good problem to have). I had a gig out of town and was able to email my patches to the rental company and they had "my' keyboard programmed and ready to go when I arrived. Although I've used some of the automation functions live, this is primarily a player's instrument with natural-feeling weighted keys. Action is a bit heavy for my taste and weighted keys can be awkward for organ solos, but this is a exceptional instrument with a huge number of pleasing bread-and-butter classic sounds, great durability/reliability (I bought it new ages ago, have never had to get it serviced), and very customizable patches and splits. I'm always finding problems with my gear but I've NEVER regretted purchasing this unit.Read full review

Yamaha sampled their best concert piano for the S90 ES and supplemented the low level harmonics with beautiful synthetic harmonics which are absent in later versions. All samples are highly realistic, bending and rotary effects are spot on. Excellent Japanese workmanship and build quality. The only negative is weight. The chassis and frame are heavy gauge metal, not plastic so your back is needed to transport this superb instrument. Newer is not always better. The quality of the engineering team and sampling team varies with each generation of instrument.

Bought this as a second to the exact same model that I already own. I am a session and live show musician and having a duplicate works out nicely for me since the other is kept at my studio, a separate location from my house. I think to date this is the best of this series that Yamaha has made. The newer version is great as well but the display is way to small compared to this one. Overall great sounds and action. One of the best piano samples period! Also makes a great workstation for composing as a writer. Many sounds to choose from. Not really for a beginner, there is a learning curve. This is a pro keyboard all the way!
I have been playing professionally for over 20 years and have used many pianos made by Korg and Kurzweil. The Yamaha product is superior in the quality of the sound, reliability, keyboard response and overall construction. These are built to last. Only piano I have used exclusively since the S90 was introduced. Highly recommended.
