The Sandman series is the only comic I've ever read, and the complexity of it is joy. There are two omnibus volumes that contain the 2000 pages of this work. Even though it was written after the other material, the Overture is really the "prequel" to the series. The artwork is wonderful, storylines are terrific. I pick up something new each time I read this series.

Taking place both before the very first issue of Neil Gaiman's Sandman and just after the events of the very last issue, Overture finally tells the one tale Gaiman had said he had to cut from the series because it did not fit the narrative. Though a sort of prequel, explaining how the Sandman got in such a weak state he could have been captured in the first place, and generally explaining some things implied but never clarified in the series, it is best to read Overture as a Finale. Fantastic art (perhaps the very best of the series as a whole) drives through some heady concepts aimed squarely at fans of the series.
