Reimbursing eBay

If a buyer doesn’t receive their item, or if it doesn’t match the listing description, they may ask us to help if you can’t solve their issue. If we refund the buyer after reviewing the case, we’ll seek reimbursement from you.

If a buyer asks us to step in and help with an eBay Money Back Guarantee case, and we decide in their favor, we may refund them directly and seek reimbursement from you.

If we refund your buyer, we’ll let you know by email, and include the reimbursement amount: the cost of the item plus the original cost of shipping.

How reimbursement works

Funds from your account are automatically reversed to refund the buyer. If the full amount isn’t available in your account, we may deduct the remaining amount when it becomes available, or charge the automatic payment method you have on file. We’ll need another reimbursement method if there are insufficient funds in your account.

You can also make a one-time reimbursement payment. We’ll send you an email with the case details and a link to where you can make a payment. This reimbursement method isn’t available to managed payments sellers.

If you’re a managed payments seller, we’ll deduct from your pending funds to refund the buyer. If the full amount isn’t available in your account, we’ll add the charge to your monthly invoice.

Tip
If we refund the buyer for multiple transactions, we’ll seek reimbursement for the full amount. You’ll see separate line items for each transaction requiring reimbursement in your payment method statement. The reimbursement amount is charged to your automatic payment method on file, or we’ll add it to your next seller invoice.

Adding or changing your automatic payment method

When you create a seller account, we ask you to add a payment method for both seller fees and reimbursement charges:

  1. Sign in to eBay.
  2. Select your Username at the top left-hand side of the screen.
  3. Select Account settings.
  4. Select Personal information - opens in new window or tab.
  5. Select Site preferences.
  6. Select Financial information under the Business information tab.

What happens if you don’t reimburse eBay?

If you don’t reimburse eBay, your account may be put on hold or suspended, preventing you from buying or selling. Once your outstanding reimbursements are paid, the hold or suspension will be removed.

If we suspend your account and you continue to withhold reimbursement fees, your details will be passed on to a collections service.

If we refund your buyer, we’ll let you know by email, and include the reimbursement amount: the cost of the item plus the original cost of shipping.
