2-stroke versus 4-stroke Yamaha powerheads

Some of the new or rebuilt Yamaha outboard powerheads are 2-cycle models and others are 4-cycle models. Here is some basic information about each type:

• 2-cycle: This kind of Yamaha outboard powerhead runs with two cycles. On a single revolution, there is a combined power and exhaust stroke followed by a compression and intake stroke. There are only three main moving parts — the crankshaft, connecting rod, and piston — meaning that maintenance is relatively minimal; 2-stroke powerheads are typically smaller and lighter than their counterparts.
• 4-cycle: You may want a 4-cycle engine on your powerhead if you're looking for more torque. These types of engines also have comparatively low emissions and can be more fuel-efficient than 2-stroke models. With this type of engine, the first movement is a power stroke, followed by an exhaust stroke, an intake stroke, and a compression stroke. Two full revolutions are required for the cycle to be complete.

How does horsepower factor in when buying a Yamaha outboard powerhead?

You'll want to have the right amount of horsepower given the boat you'll be driving. First of all, check the owner's manual for the boat to determine the maximum horsepower you can have. Exceeding that amount could be dangerous. Also, consider fuel efficiency. If you run full throttle on a smaller engine all the time, you'll be burning more fuel than if you had a bigger engine and drove at three-quarters throttle. On the smaller end of the scale, you could find a 70 hp Yamaha powerhead or a Yamaha 150 powerhead. If you have greater needs, you could get a Yamaha 200 powerhead or a Yamaha f350 powerhead. Consider upgrading to a larger engine if you plan on towing people behind you or if you plan on having a lot of people on your boat, which would increase the overall weight.

Powerhead cylinders

You'll see the term "cylinder" as you browse the collection on eBay. Each cylinder is capable of producing power, so the four-cylinder Yamaha models will be more powerful than three- or two-cylinder powerheads. Note that engines with fewer cylinders may be among the cheaper Yamaha powerheads for sale.
