Tropical Live Aquarium Guppy Fish

Guppy Tropical Live Aquarium Fish

Guppies are small tropical freshwater fish. They are fun to watch, colorful, easy to care for, and can thrive in a variety of conditions. This makes female guppies and male guppies an excellent choice for a first-time fish owner.

How many guppies should you get?
  • Guppies are a social fish and do better together.
  • The number of guppies you can get varies based on the size of your aquarium. Most aquarium experts recommend one gallon of water for every inch of fish. This means around five to eight guppy fish in a 10-gallon tank.
  • If you are getting both males and females, a 1:2 male-to-female ratio is recommended. Watch them grow from guppy fry into full-grown guppy fish.
What kind of food do they need and how much?
  • Guppies can be fed a variety of foods and should have a varied diet.
  • Flake food formulated for tropical fish is a good core diet for pet guppies.
  • Freeze dried and live foods, such as brine shrimp, are good additional elements of a guppy's diet.
  • Feed them small amounts once or twice a day.
What tank sizes are ideal?
  • Recommended tank size changes depending on how many fish you wish to get. A 10-gallon tank is usually considered ideal, although larger tanks can be used if you want to keep more guppies.
  • Tanks should have partial water changes once a week or so.
  • Tanks and gravel should be cleaned as needed.
What tank conditions are ideal?
  • Water that comes from the tap needs to be conditioned for fish. Specialized drops will make the water suitable. The nitrogen cycle also must be completed before fish may be kept in it.
  • Guppies are tropical fish, meaning the water in their tank should be kept at around 70-85 degrees at all times.
  • Ideal pH levels should be from 6.8 to 7.6.
  • You will need to put roughly two inches of gravel at the bottom of the tank.
  • Give your guppies plenty of tank ornaments, such as plants, rocks, and other decorations.
  • Your tank needs to be equipped with a quality water filter. Be sure to change the filter regularly.
How long do guppies live?

Guppies typically live up to two years.

Can you keep guppies with other fish?
  • In many cases, guppies do very well in tanks with more than one species of fish. Mollies and Neon Tetras are common choices.
  • When setting up a tank or adding new occupants, always ensure the different species have similar water and diet requirements. Choose fish that are similar in size to guppies as well.
  • Bottom-feeders tend to do well with guppies because they will occupy the bottom areas of the tank while the guppies occupy the middle and top areas.
  • Algae eaters and snails can keep a tank clean and be great companions for guppies.
