Key Blanks for Jaguar XJS

Jaguar XJS Key Blanks

Jaguar Cars sold the XJS from 1975 to 1996, when Jaguar was a British-owned company. As a luxury grand tourer car with a two-door coupe body style and a V12 engine, this Jaguar is a luxury asset that requires protection from theft and vandalism. This parts category provides Jaguar compatible key blanks and related items to ensure the security of your Jaguar XJS.

What is a key blank?

A key blank is the body of the key prior to being cut for its bitting. To function properly, a key blank for the Jaguar XJS must be of the proper thickness, length, and configuration to fit inside the cylinders of the locks on your Jaguar XJS. As there is little industry standardization of car locks, a key blank that is not specifically identified for use on a Jaguar XJS probably will not fit the XJSs lock and perform its function on this model, even if it is cut to the proper bitting.

What is key bitting?

Key bitting is the unique configuration of the part of the key that interfaces with the tumblers. The geometry is prescribed by a key code specified by the maker of the lock. Key bittings can be duplicated from existing keys onto blanks, or from knowing the specific code sequence of the bitting. Your XJS will have a specific bitting for its key blanks. Bitting on a key can wear down or be damaged, and if it is in such a condition, a new key will have to made from a blank. If the bitting of the original key is not in good condition, the key cannot be duplicated, so the key blank must be fabricated from the key code.

What is a frequency detector tester counter for?

A frequency detector tester counter identifies the remote control RF frequency used by a car key fob. When the key fob for your XJS is held next to the detector and the fobs button is pressed, the RF transmitter signal is detected and its frequency is identified. This information can be used to verify that the key fob for the Jaguar is operating at the correct frequency.

What is a transponder car key?

Many Jaguars have transponder keys. A transponder car key has a transponder chip inside of it that disables the engine immobilizer when the key is turned in the ignition. In other words, it is an anti-theft device that prevents a car from being hot-wired by requiring that the correct key to the car be in the ignition.

A transponder key will have a plastic head to contain the transponder chip. In other words, a bare metal key for your XJS will not be a transponder key.
