Hair Extensions

Human hair and synthetic hair extensions are a simple way to add body wave, length, volume, and style to your natural hair. This natural-looking solution is fast, easy, and available in a wide variety of styles. Whether your locks are curly, wavy, or straight, hair extensions help update and revitalize your hairstyle.

What are synthetic hair extensions and synthetic wigs made of?

Synthetic hair extensions are made from fine, low-grade acrylic fibers. The acrylic is heated and then formed into individual strands. After this process, the synthetic hair is woven to create hair extensions to look like natural human hair. Certain types of synthetic wigs and synthetic hair extensions are able to handle high heat styling and are tangle-resistant, similar to their human hair counterparts.

What are human hair extensions made of?

Extensions made from human hair are a natural solution. There are typically four types of human hair used in this type of extension: Chinese, Indonesian, Indian, and European. Each type of human hair possesses its own unique qualities in regards to texture, density, and ease of styling. While Chinese hair extensions have a thicker density, Indonesian, Indian and European hair extensions are easier to style.

Where does the hair for human hair extensions come from?

Human hair extensions are typically exported from Asia. Often, this type of extension is imported from India as the product of religious pilgrimages to temples where the head is shaven as a devotional ritual. Other hair extensions are comprised of hair exported from China, Indonesia, and north-eastern Europe.

What are the different methods of using hair extensions?

There are several different methods for putting in your hair extensions that are either temporary or semi-permanent. While some hair extensions temporarily clip into the hair, others are braided or woven for a semi-permanent solution. Clip-in hair extensions can be done at home whereas hot fusion/keratin bonds, cold fusion/micro-links/I-tips, tape in, glue-in, or sew-in/braided applications require an appointment with a stylist for proper, safe applications.

How long does it take to get hair extensions?

Application times vary depending on the method of application chosen:

  • Clip-in: 10-20 minutes
  • Tape-in: 30-60 minutes
  • Glue in: 1 to 2 hours
  • Sew in/Braiding3-4 hours
  • Cold Fusion/Micro-Links/I-Tips: 4-6 hours
  • Hot Fusion/Keratin Bond: 6-8 hours
How long do hair extensions last?

The method of application and proper maintenance both affect how long hair extensions last. With proper maintenance and care, you can get the most out of your extensions. Typically, the longer the application time, the longer your hair extensions will last. Clip-in hair extensions, for example, must be taken out nightly. Cold fusion and hot fusion applications, however, can last for up to six months as long as proper hair maintenance and hair care is practiced.
