Choosing a Monitor to Use with Your Existing PC or Laptop

Whether you need to replace your existing monitor, to pair with your laptop, or just to expand your desktop work-space, there are a lot of options with features like built-in speakers, LED backlit with full HD, or LDC monitors.

What Are Some Useful Features to Look for in a Monitor?

There are a lot of useful features to consider when selecting a monitor. Maybe you just need a basic monitor to expand your work space, so a basic HD screen and no speakers work for you, or you are a gamer or video editor, so you are looking for definition. Here are a few features to look for.

  • Monitor Speakers- For gamers, video editors, or using your monitor as a home entertainment system, getting a monitor with built in speakers for extra audio is a useful feature. However, finding a PC monitor with stereo speakers will take some digging because most monitors do not come with speakers.
  • Screens- Try Ultra HD (4K/5K) if the picture is your greatest concern, but there still a lot of FHD and QHD type screens available. You can also still get regular HD screens.
  • Ports- Most monitors are going to come with at least one HDMI cable port and one VGA port. Other possible ports include DVI and USB.

What Kinds of Screens Are Available?

Modern flat screen monitors are all variations of liquid crystal display (LCD) screens. There are two main categories.

  • CCFL LCD Monitors- Older models of LCD screens light up the LCD panel using a cold cathode fluorescent light (CCFL), which is the same thing one uses in office lighting.
  • LED LCD Monitor- When it is an LED-lit screen that usually means that there is an LCD panel with an array of light emitting diodes (LED) providing backlighting.
