Duracell Rechargeable Batteries
Rechargeable batteries can power demanding devices without needing to find replacements. Some batteries are made for low-drain appliances like clocks and remote controls while others are intended for high-drain devices such as cameras and media players. The important thing is that those items you need or want at your fingertips have batteries that are ready to work.
What do NiMH and NiCad mean?NiMH refers to nickel-metal hydride. Batteries made of this material are environmentally safe and have a high power capacity. This battery type will not lose its ability to retain its full voltage capacity after charging. These batteries can be used for either high- or low-drain appliances.
NiCad stands for nickel cadmium. NiCad batteries can be safely stored at temperatures between -4 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes them a good choice for use in rugged or high-temperature situations.
An important thing to know is that all batteries have an mAh rating. For example, a AA battery rated at 1800 mAh can provide 1800mA continuously for one hour. If the battery has a higher rating, it can run longer.
What kind of charger do rechargeable batteries need?To get the most use and benefit from rechargeable products, use a charger that is the same brand as your battery. To recharge NiMH batteries, be certain that the charging appliance can handle that type of battery. Some models can recharge both NiMH and NiCad types. Consider a smart charger, which has circuitry to detect when batteries are fully charged and then shuts off. Most support both AA and AAA batteries. It's a good practice to charge all batteries of the same type rather than mixing the two when charging your batteries.
How often should batteries be charged?AA and AAA rechargeable batteries should be charged the first time before you use them, unless they came pre-charged. Pre-charged batteries typically have enough charge to be used straight after purchase.
Since NiMH AAA and AA batteries do not suffer from the memory effect, you can charge them at any time, no matter how much charge is left. If you are not using the batteries right away, store them in a cool, dry location. When charging, avoid mixing batteries with varying capacities. Try to charge rechargeable batteries with the same capacity and energy level simultaneously. Now that you have learned about the differences in rechargeable batteries, you will be able to make the best choices for your devices.
