An Introduction to Scion tC Engines

Introduced in 2003, Toyota designed the Scion to appeal to Generation Y consumers, and Toyota debuted the tC, or touring coupe, the following year as its sports model. Though out of production since 2016, you can still find a Scion tC engine for sale on eBay, allowing for replacement or rebuilding any model year of the vehicle. Preowned and gently used complete engines for a Scion tC are a great way to upgrade and rebuild your vehicle.

The original Scion tC engine is rated at 160 horsepower. It features a 2.4-liter double overhead cam I-4 engine.

This set of engines earned an average EPA-estimated 23 mpg in city driving situations and 26 mpg on the highway.

You’ll need to reference the year of the vehicle’s manufacture because the engine went through developmental changes and there are significant differences between a 2006 scion tC engine and a 2007 scion tC engine. The 2007 models updated to the second generation 2AZ-FE engine with the following features:

• Updated pistons and rods
• Reworked cam profile
• Reworked intake tract and exhaust flange
• Oil squirters on each piston

This engine improved on the average mpg of the Scion tC, earning an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in city driving situations and 29 mpg on the highway. The 2007 engine also used a fuel cut-off with an RPM rev limiter set to 6500 rpm. Pushing the car above 6500 rpm shut the fuel flow off, so the car would shut down. The 2008 Scion tC engine remained the same, and the engine did not undergo another redesign until 2011 when it became the 2AR-FE engine. Its 2.5-liter four-cylinder design provided an output of 179 horsepower. The 2011 engine was altered further for that season’s competition for Formula Drift. The Formula version featured a 2.7-liter engine capable of more than 500 hp.

A remanufactured engine refers to an engine rebuilt by a third-party company. Sometimes, the manufacturer of the original part also rehabs engines Scion tC motors. If you prefer to rebuild an engine yourself, do not forget to pick up an engine hoist and stand while you’re shopping on eBay. A hoist/stand with a telescopic boom makes it easier to position the engine during removal and replacement.
