Catalytic Converters for Cadillac SRX

The catalytic converter on your Cadillac SRX is an important part of your exhaust system. This device converts the dangerous exhaust gases that leave the engine into something less toxic for the environment. The three specific gases that a catalytic converter deals with are carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons.

What are the signs of a bad converter?

It is possible to have a damaged converter and be unaware of the situation until your vehicle fails the emissions portion of your state safety inspection, if applicable. You may also notice a sharp decrease in fuel efficiency as well as a lack of acceleration. A vehicle with a bad cat may refuse to start and it could cause the car's check engine light to come on.

Will a car run without a catalytic converter?

Your Cadillac will run without a converter and may even run better than it did with the device. Converters build back pressure in the engine and can actually hinder a car's performance. Although the vehicle is capable of running without the part, you should never drive without it. Doing so increases the harmful emissions created by your exhaust and it is illegal in all 50 states. Any car that left the factory with a catalytic converter is required to have one. Expect a hefty ticket if you're caught driving your car on public roadways without this exhaust system part.

Are used catalytic converters available?

Used catalytic converters are extremely rare and difficult to find. In order for a used converter to be legally sold, it must be tested and labeled according to strict federal guidelines. As a result, most junkyards and used parts dealers simply avoid selling these parts rather than deal with the red tape required to sell them legally. It is also illegal for your mechanic to install a used converter without testing it, even if you are willing to certify that the part works. It is simply more cost-effective and efficient to replace a cat with a new part.

Why do people steal catalytic converters?

Unfortunately, converters are frequently stolen when the price of scrap metal is high. Converters contain platinum, palladium and other highly valued metals, tempting thieves to steal the parts and sell them for scrap. To deter thieves, park your vehicle in a secure garage whenever possible. When it isn't, park in well-lit, heavily populated areas. You can cut the bolt heads off of the converter to make it more difficult to steal or weld the bolts in place. It is also a good idea to etch your driver's license or license plate number into your converter so it can be identified if it is taken.
