Not the Latest, but the Greatest
Keep in mind that the Amazon Kindle 2nd Generation is no longer available new. It has been surpassed by several newer generations of Kindle Readers. But some people, like me, do not buy into newer technology, such as touch-screen readers, just for the sake of having the latest model. I love the Kindle 2nd Generation, and I purchased this refurbished Kindle 2nd Generation as a backup to my current Kindle 2nd Generation which was given to me by a friend. I have been having issues with my current Kindle 2nd Generation, and I just wanted to have a backup in case it conked out. The best things about the Amazon Kindle 2nd Generation: (1.) The Kindle 2nd Generation has a physical keyboard right on the face of the reader. (2.) It is very easy to set up Collections on the Kindle 2nd Generation (I like to keep my books organized by either genre or author.) (3.) The Kindle 2nd Generation never loses your place in a book, even if you are reading two or more books simultaneously. (4.) I find the Kindle 2nd Generation way more user friendly for reading than touch-screen readers such as the Fire HD 8 - which I also have. (5.) The OEM Kindle battery has a really long life, but is easy to replace when it finally dies. (But you must replace it with an OEM Kindle battery.)

Decent cheap e-reader that doens't need wi-fi
The main thing the Kindle 2 has going for it its now low price and the Whispernet that avoids the need for Wi-fi. The battery life is great, though, as with all older products, you may need to replace it to get the full life out of it. The included web browser was limited when it first came out, and is even more limited now, since cannot handle HTTPS properly. Gone are the days of it being a "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" by incorporating Wikipedia. Although the Internet connection is free, it's extremely limited. If you want something more fully featured and don't mind using Wi-fi, you may want to pay a few dollars more to get a Kindle 4 or such. But if you want a no-light, e-ink e-reader you can use anywhere, you could do a lot worse. The screen looks better than the lower resolution would make you think, as well. You cannot see individual pixels.

I have been reluctant to change from my much beloved paper and ink books, but this is so convenient and so light weight with so many free books available that I'm sold! I prefer a keyboard to a touchscreen, so I bought this one. Registration with Amazon was easy, the reader looks nearly new and works perfectly, even the 3G. I am amazed at how many free books are out there. The battery life is pretty good, although not quite as long as I had hoped. The battery may need replacement eventually, but they are available at a reasonable cost. I only use the Kindle to read and use the wi-fi/3G only to download books (turning it off greatly increases time between recharges), but if that's what you are looking for, this is a great product.

Flat digital ink is best for your eyes
I love this version of the Kindle! I've had it for years but I lost it on the train- decided to replace it with a brand new one but ended up disliking the glowing screen. Sent it back and bought this refurbished version of my old one. This one is so nice because it's digital ink that looks like paper. I can stare at it all day without feeling sick or hurting my eyes. If I need light I just turn on my lamp as I would with a book. Not a problem. And the button changes the pages quickly. Great value!

This older generation Kindle has everything I want and nothing I don't! The screen is similar to the Kindle Paperwhite (which I also own), meaning I can read it outside in bright sunlight. It isn't backlit, but I have a sufficient supply of lighting in my home and most other places I read. I bought one that looks like it has never been used. Aside from an initial set-up snag - which was easily fixed by resetting the device - I have had no trouble with it whatsoever. I LOVE IT!!!

I like the keyboard and 3G access
The device works well. The controls aren't completely intuitive, but it only took a short while to figure them out. It's easy to access the Amazon store and all of the Kindle books I've purchased. It's also very simply to side load books purchased elsewhere. I cannot comment on the battery life, as I charged it less than a week ago. So far so good, but that part remains to be seen. I am satisfied with the product and would recommend it to others.

Perfect replacement
My 98 year old mom's kindle in this model just quit working. I'm so happy not to have to go through the big learning curve of replacing it with a different model. This one is exactly identical to hers right down to the slight opening in the edge where the back has separated a little. Works better than the old one. Thanks!

Paper Weight
The screen is nice, the weight feels good in one hand. The problem is that due to the new software update not working properly, it's impossible to register the kindle. This means no access to your kindle library. Amazon needs to support this once great e-reader and workout the bugs of version 2.5.8.

Unable to use it with Amazon
Unfortunately, the product is no longer eligible for registration on the Amazon account site; I escalated the issue beyond the help desk and confirmed that I was not going to be allowed to use the device. Honestly have not tried to return it to the sender yet, but will try to do so.

Works fine but case is damaged
Device works but there is a crack in the top right corner of the screen that was there when I received the device. Since it works I decided to keep it. The price was good which is the reason I did not send it back.
