The Commitments DVD, 2004, 2-Disc Set, Collectors Edition

Excellent picture quality, even on a Hi-def TV!
Unusual, excellent movie about a 1960s soul music band put together in the 1990s by a young local in Ireland, and the working-class band's ups and downs, along with his own personal travails. The band has more than 10 members, incl. 3 pretty female backup singers (2 of whom occasionally sing lead), so various subplots and tensions play out. Extremely entertaining, constantly funny, and if it weren't for the unnecessarily persistent use of foul language and a gratuitous sex scene (where no nudity was shown), this would be a great movie for the entire family. Very funny, quite enjoyable, very musical, keeps your interest the entire time, and lots of great 1960s American soul music is played throughout by some very talented people. This is the definitive version of the DVD to purchase, and I own several different versions. This one shows the movie in anamorphic widescreen (unlike some other versions in 4x3), and has been remastered to have an extremely sharp picture, yes, even on a high-definition TV. The Blu-ray is about to be released, and I'm curious if they can get the picture quality appreciably better than is seen here, because this is really an excellent picture for DVD, even on a high-definition TV set, which ordinarily makes DVDs look pretty mediocre. This 2-disc set has the most extras available for any DVD version of this movie (it has 2 or 3 on the making of the film), and is the definitive DVD version.

MR COFFEE HARPWELL 2 QUART WHISTLING TEA COFFEE KETTLE STAINLESS STEEL
Mar 27, 2018
Attractive kettle, but has issues
Definitely a handsome tea kettle. The major point of attraction to me was that the kettle portion appears to be one piece of solid metal, thus unlikely to develop leaks, with age, at the bottom seam as many others do. (This may indeed not actually be a solid piece of metal, but it appears to be a molded one-piece, yet it might be two pieces very well soldered together and then smoothed. I could not say for sure, except that even looking inside, there is no discernible solder line as there is in a Copco version that looks awfully similar and is selling at Walmart.) That Copco version has a spout cover that will not stay open on its own, you always have to keep your finger on the button to hold it open, whereas this Mr. Coffee Harpwell model's spout will stay open or closed on its own, as you desire, without the need to keep your finger on the button. The mechanism seems to work solidly, by the way. One of the problems with this tea kettle is that the whistle is extremely soft, i.e., low-volume. If you are not in the kitchen, and for that matter, without any radio or TV on, then you won't hear the whistle; it is not nearly as loud as the whistle on other tea kettles with which I'm familiar, whereby you can hear the whistle in another room. Not with this one. The sound is VERY soft. Also, this has a wide, very large-diameter 2-piece metal and plastic center lid, with the metal and the plastic pieces attaching with two metal screws. A couple of problems here. First, even though you may have the lid sealed tightly, when the water is boiling, steam seeps out through some of the edges where this lid appears sealed against the kettle. You wouldn't want to pick up the kettle and burn your hands on the steam, but you might. Additionally, you will find that when you remove the center lid, there is water inside the lid; I don't know exactly how one is to remove that but I imagine it will become rusty or contaminated over time. It may have originated as steam that rose into the lid and then cooled off later. Why they don't use just a single metal piece for the lid, maybe with a small plastic ring handle, is beyond me. Otherwise, this is definitely a handsome tea kettle with a rich mirror finish, it boils water with reasonable speed, the handle generally doesn't get hot, or not very hot, and it generally functions well, but with the above concerns. However, because of those concerns, this is not the best or second-best tea kettle I have ever owned. And I really cannot use it in my present home set-up, as I go to adjacent rooms and could always depend on hearing the whistling of my other tea kettle-- but not this one.
