Max Richter-From Sleep (UK IMPORT) CD / Box Set NEW
Sep 11, 2019
Captivating Music from one of our greatest composers today!
This is a truly amazing, unusual, cycle of music. I was mesmerized a while ago by Max Richter’s “the Blue Notebooks” and thus was drawn in by the descriptive details of this 8 disk set titled “Sleep”. It is mesmerizing music, relaxing, subtle at times and not so much at other points. Some have stated that they could not review it as they continually fell asleep and were unable to rate it. Personally I have also drifted off sometimes and other times made it all the way through without drifting off. If you are unfamiliar with Max Richter’s music there are snippets etc online to familiarize yourself with his work. Never ever boring, never uninteresting and always subtly satisfying but never seeming “in your face” as other modern composers’ works can be. I easily and confidently give this set a 5-star rating. If you like new age type music, meditative music, or just interesting quieter music you are sure to fall in love with this set. Whether you sit through all 8 disks at one setting or cycle through them on separate occasions you will always find yourself engaged by Richter’s genius. Enjoy this set! Greg Foster

Wonderful! Kudos to all involved with this productilon!
Amazing.... I am a great lover of Wagner's works, and have numerous recordings of all of them. Of course, as most "Wagnerites" know, with works this complex and with such torturous technical requirements (both vocally and performance length), and the sheer number of top-notch singers required to fill the roles, there always seems to be at least one "fly in the ointment", so to speak, which keeps any particular one recording from being "the perfect recording". This one, while truly magnificent, too, has its limitation(s), but they truly are well within bounds to make this, perhaps, a first choice. First, we have the recorded sound, in SACD multi channel, of the WDR Sinfonieorchester Koln, here presenting this wonderful score in the finest reading that I have heard for a very long time. Bychkov is, like Thielemann, an absolute natural in this music and we are most fortunate, indeed, to have the both of them today, leading the way to keeping the standards of these great works at this level of interpretation. The singers; well, overall they are remarkably good. Certainly not the great singers that we were accustomed to right after the War and up through the 70's, but they turn in the finest interpretations we have heard for years. Botha will grow, and surely will develop polish, and will become a great heldentenor. He sings sensitively, is tireless, and other-worldly in those odd, introspective moments, potent and veral when called for, accompanied by clear diction, wonderous exclamation, and lyricism...all you could ask for in a Lohengrin. Although I had never heard of Adrianne Pieczonka, her Elsa is just lovely. She has a distinct sound, and thus is easily able to convey Elsa's strangeness, hesitancy, fearfulness, naivete, and yet lovely and warm in the love duet, and thrills with becoming dark, once she realizes what she has done. She is not, of course, another Grummer, Dernesch,or Nilsson, but she certainly is wonderful. Petra Lang turns in, easily, what is the finest Otrud on disc...she is solid and comfortable throughout the entire range required....simply wonderful! Struckmann, whom we have heard in this role before for Barenboim, once again turns in a fierce, evil Telrumand. The smaller roles are all very well taken, and do not dissapoint. Again, the sound on these discs is just breath-taking, surely a genius was at work in the control room to keep the balance exactly just right between the singers, orchestra, and chorus...this Lohengren simply SHINES! In closing I will say this: 1. Botha is NOT Sandor Konya, nor is he James King, but he is, indeed, Wonderful! 2. Where does this effort stand in relationship to previous Lohengrins? Well, sonically, and for expertise of playing and directorship, it certainly is top of the heap. But, that said, somehow it is not the Kempe which has reigned for many years as "the" Lohengrin. 3. Truth be told, you really need 3 Lohengrins....this one, the Kempe, and one with Sandor Konya, surely the finest Lohengrin that ever graced the stage. I prefer the Cluytens from Bayreuth 1958 over the Leinsdorf on RCA which is marred by the Elsa of Amara, and the Otrud of Gorr, which is truly dreadful. ~operabruin

JUST WONDERFUL being "INVADED" again!
How marvelous to once again experience this wonderful example of the "Earth Disaster" Science Fiction. Of course most of us are familiar first with the wonderful movie of this great story. Then, I would guess, would be familiarity with the book. Following are the re-makes of the movie, but NONE of them really surpass this great old cinematic shocker. And now, read by the Director of the original movie's son, comes this sensational Audio Book version, totally uncut and unabridged. It is just tremendous, and I cannot highly recommend it enough to those who either love this type of Science Fiction, Great Classic, or who would just like to experience "the movie" in a different light. First Class production, all the way, and a very clever protective package for the discs, along with terrific cover art, invoking creepy memories of those scary "PodPeople" in production! Trust me, Folks, this little package is a CHILLER, and a KEEPER! Happy Listening! (Oh, and don't forget to check the cellar before going to sleep!). ~operabruin
