Forensics Feeling Its Way
Having come to CSI late when it was on television, I decided to go back to the inception to see what I had missed. Viewing Season 1 is a hoot. From the pilot through the various episodes, you can watch 1) Grissom's hair color change as part of the developing character; 2) a tougher, declasse Katherine whom it is not difficult to imagine dancing around a stripper's pole; 3) Warrick's gambling addiction almost leading him astray but then paving the way for the later Warrick; 4) a not-yet buff Nick. Also still in development: the fingerprint woman who has not yet gotten her prop glasses. Introduced in later episodes is our gruff pathologist (who knew he had a thing for lattes?), a possible love interest for Grissom and two stalwarts whose characters are pretty much on track as they will be during the entire run: Sara, abrasive and obnoxious as ever (confession: I NEVER liked her and am still unhappy that she won out over Lady Heather!) and an immature Greg -- whose character development over the 9 seasons is the most gradual and fleshed out. Here is the dork who grows up in the job. The episodes are not as tightly written as later seasons (before they start falling apart in season 9) and there are lacunae in the conclusions reached by characters from the the evidence they process and/or not well-founded conclusionary leaps. If you're curious about the work-in-progress aspect of this series it's worth watching. If you got hooked later, you may find the writing/storylines less well-crafted and some of the reasoning/evidence shortcuts irritating.

NCIS: The Thirteenth Season 13 (DVD, 2016, 6-Disc Set)

Goodbye Tony!
I bought this because it's the last season with Tony Dinozo. His role hasn't been as strongly written as when he was the literal anchor of the group under Gibbs, perhaps to ease his character out. Bishop is not as irritating as she has been in the past -- I COULD NOT understand why Gibbs kept putting up with her stupid errors in the past that allowed villains to escape or put the team in danger. There's been a focus on her evolution to a stronger person but how that will translate into a more functional team member we'll have to see (although she'll never match Kate or Ziva). Tim has matured into his role, Abby can be a bit too "Abby-ish" in the episodes where she is central, and Ducky is still "ducky." As for Gibbs, I can't quite put my finger on it -- and that may be to the good. The subtlety of almost having died is being played out differently this season. All in all, if you want a reminder that "we'll always have Paris" for Tony, this will do it.

Game of Thrones makes you want to play along
Okay - I don't have cable but several folks I work with raved about Game of Thrones and I read an article in the New York Times about the actor who plays Tyrion so my interest was piqued. I tried the public library but Game of Thrones was not in their holdings. What to do? Go on ebay of course and lo and behold, there were myriads of copies available. So I bid. And I won. And then it arrived. And into the DVR it went. I must say, I understand the hype. It's addictive - a soapy combination of faux medieval history with Harry Potter-esque aspects (in Season 2 which I promptly ordered after finishing season 1), dragons and a scary world beyond. As well as stalwart heroes, villains of all shades, a plucky young heroine, and the misunderstood Tyrion. In short, it has something for just about everyone EXCEPT be ready to send the kids for snacks at times because the sex scenes are quite spicy and you might not want them asking "Mommy, what's incest?" on "What are those two men doing?." In short, it's no intellectual challenge but jolly good entertainment beautifully filmed.
