Bravo, Carlo Bergonzi!! - a true prince among tenors!
This CD should b a gr8 piece of joy 4 any1 who loves singing. And if u're in2 records of artists from 50s & 60s then this is the 1 u need 2 hunt 4, if u haven't got it yet. That Carlo Bergonzi is 1 of the finest musicians of his days (& 1 of the greatest vocalists in the whole history of opera) was agreed long ago & is now beyond discussion - 1 may not like Bergonzi but many do, & a lot - hence his name is already there, in the hall of fame. This disc is just 1 more proof of his greatness. On this record we've got a selection of arias from Verdi's operas which should not b a surprise - not only that vast majority of tenors sing those roles but Bergonzi himself gained his fame as the most verdian tenor of his time: "Celeste Aida", "O fede negar potessi! - Quando le sere al placido..." (LUISA MILLER), "La vita e un inferno all'infelice" (FORZA), "Ah si, ben mio" (TROVATORE), all 3 arias from BALLO IN MASCHERA, "Fontainebleu! Io la vidi" (DON CARLO) & "Lungi da lei... De' miei bollenti spiriti... O mio rimorso..." (TRAVIATA). Riccardo / Gustavo was very much Bergonzi's role & his interpretation is 1 of the finest available on record. Of the remaining ones it is the LUISA MILLER aria which always leaves great impresion but also the TRAVIATA bit should b of special interest: not only that we've got the often missing cabaletta but what cabaletta it is!! - u just give it a go and listen 2 it yourself! - my jaw drops each time... The discs concludes with beautifully sung GIOCONDA (well, Enzo's) aria from DECCA's complete recording, with Tebaldi singing the title role and Gardelli conducting but b4 that there's the "Gelida manina" from the famous BOHEME under Serafin's supervision - both ardent & romantic, kept at the right temperature - of all tenors only Bergonzi convinced me his Rodolfo actually WAS a poet. In between we've got a few other arias: "O paradiso" (AFRICANA), both TOSCA arias but a real cherry on top of a cake are the MANON LESCAUT, ADRIANA LECOUVREUR & ANDREA CHENIER arias: while we are gr8ful 4 these we can also regret Bergonzi never recorded these operas complete in studio (apart from Cilea's opera, which alas was recorded at least a decade too late) - to me they're the greatest interpretations of these arias available on records - right weight & colour of the voice, right tempi, never overdone - I can listen 2 them again & again. "La dolcissima effigie" & "Come un bel di di maggio" in particular make me stop breathing - this is unbelieveable, this is maestry. Yes, u can get excited about Corelli & Del Monaco singing those as well (& I love them, too) but it is Bergonzi's readings that give me goosebumps. Gavazzeni, Serafin and Solti r class in themselves & do not need recommendation. So there he is: Carlo Bergonzi. Objectively - yes, true, his voice was far from being perfect: neither big nor particularly beautiful, we can easily name his colleagues who possessed vocal material better than him. Perhaps they had stronger top notes, perhaps their voices were more shiny - ok, and..?? Still, Bergonzi's contribution 2 the art of singing is huge, which both his audiences and critics have recognized and appreciate. Yes, his technic & breath control r amazing. But above them there is style, elegance, passion, phrasing. Bergonzi doesn't have2 shout (not to mention scream), push or force his voice to convey the message and emotions. Final conclusion? - this disc is a must, and u'll love it. Maestro Bergonzi - thank you.

Good value for the money - an essential reading for Tebaldi's fans!
Good book, although I think it was written primarily for Tebaldi's fans. Nevertheless, if you want to learn a bit more about the famous soprano, don't hesitate to go for it - especially as it is not so easy to find nowadays!!

Pleasant and enjoyable.
Informative, well filmed in authentic locations - probably both for beginners and for those who are more advanced in the subject.
