Complete title is "An American Mosey" - quite a stroll!
This is a book for the person who travels adventurously and with an open curiosity about the people, the geography, the history, the traditions, the tales that spring from the lesser known spots on the map -- spots which turn into places now intimately known in the reader's heart and mind. Heat-Moon touched many folks with his first book, Blue Highways, moving many to turn their blinkers on and exit the interstates and immerse themselves back into (or for the first time) what is the real America, the homemade apple pie part, though never, never seen through rose-colored glasses. Roads to Quoz continues that quest -- this time not with as much of a philosophical bent, but with a zany quirkiness to find the unusual and search out the details of the oddity. Especially compelling was his historical narrative about events that took place in Joplin, Missouri, over a century ago. These are writings not only about place, but about life. Many years ago, I read Heat Moon's "River Horse" and sent him a note of appreciation. He is a kind person -- and the kind of person who responded, asked me questions, and we have continued to exchange short notes and words on the back of postcards for nearly a decade. Although I am awed by his incredible writing and talent, I salute his open-wide approach to life, to surroundings, to people. And you, dear reader, will find this American Mosey a stroll long remembered.
