One of the best infantry books I have ever read
I have been a student of infantry warefare waged by the US Army in northern Europe for almost 40 years now. This is an excellent presentation by a participant PFC in the 99th Infantry Division who later became a professor of journalism. The book begins with his participation in the ASTP and explains the function of this little known program in the war effort. After Ike realised he was to run out of infantry after D-Day, the ASTP was hastily shrunk and the participants were thrown into a few new divisions. One was the 99th and another was the 106th. The ASTP posessed the smartest people in the army, even smarter than pilots (if you can imagine that). Once Mr. Neill tells you of the exploits of the men in these two divisions during the Ardennes Offensive of December 1944, does one appreciate that it was their cleverness, their ability to improvise and effectively apply their weapons and training, and their extremely high intelligence that enabled them to blunt the offensive. They saved our ass in the Battle of the Bulge and not Patton and not the weather breaking a few days after Christmas. The writing style meshes his own personal story with those of other veterans. The descriptions of the locations are so vivid, I feel that I can go right to Monschau and find his foxhole. His desciption of living at the frigid front and the shameful profiteering of soldiers behind the lines and the "look the other way" attitude of the General Staff and his feelings about officers don't leave anything to your imagination. He tells it like it was. The father of the best man at my wedding was a veteran of the 99th serving as a medic. I never could quite figure him out although after reading this book I can say now that he was a ASTPer. This book went a long way to explaining his philosophy of life and why he never sweat the small stuff. This is a well told and rarely found story of a survivor of the front line in the Bulge. An absolutely fantastic book!
