When I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic, I was blessed with both an excellent doctor who took this disease very seriously and with excellent health care coverage at work--this combination allowed me to fight it hard! My insurance had a "face to face" diabetes education program where I was able to have patient education appointments with a certified diabetes educator. Even though my diagnosis was "pre-diabetic", they went ahead and covered the education appointments and testing supplies as if I was full-blown diabetic, and due to their diligence in arming me with the right weapons to fight this illness, my numbers remained at a "pre-diabetic" state for almost 10 years! Even though now, all these years down the road, my numbers have creeped up and I'm now considered full-blown diabetic, I am still able to rely on that education that I received and have been able to keep my numbers quite low and occasionally get them back down to "pre-diabetic" levels. My father was recently diagnosed with full-blown diabetes. Unfortunately, his insurance pays for absolutely NO patient education whatsoever. So he has been left on his own to educate himself about this deadly disease. Whereas I have a background in biology and science and enjoy research such as this, my dad does not have the time to spend hours reading up about it, and, he finds it to be very intimidating and scary having been diagnosed with this serious disease and then being left to learn about how to control it ON HIS OWN! He lives in another state so I can't always be there to guide him through everything, so I got him this book to help him on his way. I had it shipped directly to him, so I haven't read it myself, but he has mentioned to me several times that this book has helped him on his journey. I also felt comfortable getting this book for him because it was edited by the American Diabetes Association, and my doctors have always told me to listen to THEIR guidelines above any other information that you may find on the internet--that their recommendations can be trusted and followed. So if you or a loved one are beginning your journey living with this disease, please consider getting this book to help you along your way.Read full review

I am finding this book to be the MOST helpful I've read on Diabetes. I've tried to read several books & didn't feel like they were really helping me to get real with the fact I have diabetes & how to approach it practically/realistically. I'm in chapter 5 and have already seen shifts in my thinking towards what to eat, how much to eat, how to have real dessert, helpful resource websites & other things. Diabetes & a changed lifestyle was so confusing before. I feel I've found the book I've been seeking for. Totally thankful I found this book!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone with Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes. Hey, if you are Pre-Diabetes like I was for years . . . LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTORS - STOP BEING IN DENIAL!! You can't turn the clock back once you have full blown Diabetes. Its in YOUR hands.Read full review
