This is an upgraded gear used in the Hunt Boston model 17 pencil sharpener: the key gear that tends to fail and prompt a user to normally toss the sharpener away and buy another one. The sharpener is excellent though, and otherwise very sturdy and well-made. For 1/10 the cost of new sharpener of equivalent quality, you can repair this gear yourself and keep another product from the landfill.

Unlike in other reviews of this type of product being ill fitting, this particular assembly fit and operated perfectly. The 3D printing is beefy, and the fit is extremely accurate.

The Boston Electric Pencil Sharpener is one of those products, which made in the U.S.A, made America great. Its form follows function and sits on the desk with unobtrusive style. Insert a pencil and this machine cuts a good, sharp point at just the right angle, and no more. Unlike some electric pencil sharpeners, it does not munch the pencil with wreckless abandon. When the job's done the Boston Pencil Sharpener stops cutting and you can get back to work and the pencil pushers in the accounting office are happy.

Debated the merits of the various versions of this gear that are offered. Opted for this more expensive one based on claim of nylon being superior to the PVC and other plastics used to 3D print this. So far so good. It, probably like them all, took a bit of effort to slip into place on the shaft. But no trimming was required and it seems to be sturdy, giving my sharpener an extended life. (Still amazed that Hunt Mfg's original gear was made out of compressed Velveeta...)
