I purchased this device for a family member who is in a nursing home, it is just a base unit and you plug your own phone into it. This works great for a senior citizen, simple, and they cant loose it since it is not a small cell phone. One more thing, my neighborhood has horrible Verizon coverage but this unit works just fine in my house, probably since it has a better antenna. Verizon added it to my existing plan for $20/month. It has unlimited calling (including long distance). Eventually I will replace my 100% reliable land line with this unit and then it can come along with us in our camper on long trips. Also, I paid about 1 fifth the price for a new unit using Ebay instead of the Verizon store.

I can't say how well it works in a rural area. I do know this unit can't be activated if you are getting new service, it's too outdated. If you currently have Verizon home phone services and want to add another box to the same line, you can do that. That is the info given to me when I called Verizon to activate.

I have been Using it for 2 years now, for the best home phone service I ever had, mine goes Mobile in My RV on Vacation, without missing a Call, Love it over Cell phones any day

I use this for my business line so I can move and keep the same number. It works well and reception is clearer than a cell phone in my marginal service area.

I tried to activate with Verizon and it turned into a tech nightmare. I was passed from one department to the next from home phone to wireless to tech support and then fios so I sent the thing back no one has time for all that I went through.
