Of the "flint and steel" type fire starters, this one consistently puts out a shower of high temp sparks. Much easier to use than then the standard two piece set up requiring you hold the flint/steel rod in one hand, and use the other to strike or scrape in order to create a spark. The Blast Match can be used with one hand, for example if the other hand is injured. You do need to prepare your tinder, and use magnesium or other material to aid in getting your fire started, but you can then put this tool right in the center, push down, and direct the sparks right where you want. It is compact, and will fit in any survival vest or bag. I would invest in some of the pre-packaged fire starter tinder material that this company also produces, as this helps with fire starting in wet or damp wood.Read full review

The store is great, and I had wanted a Blastmatch for years to put into the survival kit. But after trying this product, I now believe you should order stormproof matches from this same store. They have quick delivery and good pricing. It is just that the overall design of the Blastmatch does not work all that well to start a fire.

Product works. Seems a little flimsy. If you were taking your time and have all your wits about you, it will definitely work. Thing is, I purchased this as an emergency fire starter. For use in an emergency. In a survival situation, things won't be perfect. Imagine, you have just slid down the bank. Into icy water. You scramble back out. Need to build a fire. NOW. Bic lighter is wet. Matches are wet. Get some tinder scraped together, hands cold...shaking...numb...push sideways a little too much while using this thing and the plastic may break...oh well. Will work perfect for backyard survival, and even in a true emergency, if the plastic breaks, you can scrape it with a knife. Would still work.

So ordered this for one hand fire starting capability - It does do this but not as easily as a BIC - this takes practice and building a good base to spark into - even more than the two handed ferro rod I used before I bought this. Overall it's a good product and once you master it can throw a good amount of sparks

I will cut straight to the point: Negatives... Ultimate Survival Technologies BlastMatch Fire Starter Orange Striker (2-Pack) - "Ultimate", someone is having a joke!!!!! The 'Springs' within the 2 BlastMatch's purchased are useless for the want of better words, there is no strength in the springs, not even enough to give any type of spark even after removing the dark coating. Pathetic is a good word for the so called 'Springs'. BlastMatch should be taken off the web site for poor quality. The 2 items noted above were to be given as presents, they were eventually with a 'Hacksaw Blade Striker' supplied by myself at my cost. Positives... The body of the BlastMatch looks good and well made. Flint is large and should last a long time.
