I bought this DVD for my sister who loved it since she saw it on TV several years ago. While watching it, she told me how she remembered being impressed by the elegance of this aspect of Japanese culture often mistaken as prostitution by westerners. The image quality of the DVD is really good as it is its content, it explains in a simple yet captivating way the history of geisha and what has become of them recently, when it ends you want to see more, and find out more about this topic so intriguing for so many. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Japanese culture and in general to anyone, it is a pity that not many other documentaries about geisha have been done recently (I haven't heard of any al least). In general, I consider this DVD a good source of information about the geisha world, it's quite accurate and objective.Read full review
I am fascinated by Japan and its Geishas. I Have a Geisha tattoo that takes half of my arm. I have books upon books of Geishas, but I never had a real video that told me the story. Not a fiction novel like Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha, which is based with some non fiction, but the rest is just that. I decided to buy the video...after waiting to receive my package containing "The Secret Life Of Geisha" dvd, I could imagine that the video was going to be good, but a little boring. Oh boy was I wrong! The video was and still is amazing! It contains the most remarkable events in the history of the Japanese nation. The video also clears the air about the stipulations of Geishas being prostitutes. If you love history, Japan, Geishas, art- then this is the video for you.

OK, I'm very into the japanese culture. I knew that the modern geisha is a far diffrent from the historical style that everyone wants to know about, I wish there was a book that had a list of rules and regulations as well as the unspoken ones but it's highly unlikely there ever will be one. rules and regulations constantly changed as there was very little morality which could be maintained if you wanted to be financally successfull. I enjoyed this movie and would reccomend it to a novice or anyone who appreciates the beauty of japan and it's people.
Very well portrayed and gives the true description of the primary role of a geisha effacing the myth that a "geisha" is a sort of a madam but a highly educated female with a broad knowledge on various subjects thus able to converse and entertain gentlemen in high positions whose financial background gives them the privilege of entering the elegant house where geishas dwell.
