This film is one of several high water marks of the collaboration between Errol Flynn and Warner Brothers, his home studio from 1935 to 1952. It is the perfect combination of factory and materials, resulting in a superior product. Want to show your kids a different take on the pirate genre? Put this one on. You won't have to explain any double entendre dialogue or questionable ethics, it's all straight-up, family fun. The good guys are good, the bad guys are bad, and the heroine (Brenda Marshall) is astonishingly lovely. She helps out Errol in his ultimate struggle as opposed to needing rescue by him, a thoroughly modern take on the heroine for 1940! Purchased this because I only had it on VHS, and a 1991 version at that. This DVD from 2005 is an excellent transfer of the original theatrical-release print only discovered in the late 1980s in a film vault in Europe. You can tell because it includes the speech in the finale by Elizabeth I mirroring the then-current struggle between England and Nazi Germany as a metaphor for England vs. Spain in 1588. That speech was edited out of later theatrical and TV re-releases. Direction, story, photography, costumes, acting, are all first-rate for 1940 or any year. There will never be another Sea Hawk like Errol Flynn or a film like this. Thank you Warner Brothers and Michael Curtiz for such a terrific, everlasting, Errol Flynn classic.Read full review
Best Pirate MOVIE of the Golden Age of CINEMA.... ..Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade,, And yet the menace of the years,, Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll; I am the MASTER of my FATE: I am the CAPTAIN of My SOUL

This was Flynn's follow-up to "Adventures of Robin Hood", but harkens back to his earlier Pirate pictures. He barks, smirks, woos and fights like the seasoned professional that he was! The mass swordplay scenes were surely "catnip" to the old-time movie goers! And the "ship at sea" effects aren't half bad, either.
