VITAL- that is the only word I can think of when it come to this book! Having special needs children requires parents to be well informed and well armed with understanding when dealing with teachers, counselors and other professionals. The Out-of-Sync Child is a wonderful resource for not only parents but teachers who work with children with Sensory Processing Disorder. With entire chapters dedicated to the areas of life where your child functions, at home and school, the author does a wonderful job of providing real life examples of what to expect and how to deal with the complications that SPD brings. It also contains priceless information concerning the look-alike symptoms and what SPD is and is not, as well as how the SPD child's brain functions. I love this book and only regret not having it in my home sooner!Read full review
When your 'baby' is unhappy, the world doesn't turn. Just ask any parent of a child with disabilities! It's not until we begin to understand how to help them cope and overcome, that the world begins to turn again. The sun begins to shine when we have an idea that we are not alone and there is something we can do. This book goes into detail of what to look for with many different children on all spans of this disability to give you the insight you need and be able to compare the symptoms with your own child. Keep in mind, no two children are alike , whether they have disabilities or not. Our Son, was not covered by one particular scenario set forth in this book, but there were enough scenarios offered that it was all to clear that without the Dr. diag., we would have been able to determine that this book was the one we needed to be reading. Not only does this book help you to see that you are not alone with your child and their disability, but it also helps you to discover what will work, may work and what to try to help your child better cope with the world around them. Although this book has been read and we've learned that our Son has more disabilities along with the Sensory, it stays on our shelf as an excellent resource! Have a great Day, ~HeidiRead full review
I had already read this book- lended to me by my son's occupational therapist. I needed to have my own copy for reference. If anyone suspects their child has unusual idiosyncrasies that cannot be explained, or that sometimes interfere with "normal" situations - yet you don't think there's a serious diagnosis - I highly recommend you read this book. It may reveal things than can help you equip your child to be more successful for the rest of their life, and also calm any fears that you may have about the possibility of other disorders such as the autism spectrum. It does get a bit clinical at times - and it is a very complex subject matter. Stick with it, because toward the end of the book you will gain a much better understanding about how to cope at home, at school, and in public.
