Owing to the expense in working the materials used, the cost of these houses is nearlydouble that of wooden houses, so that a small span-roofed house like that described, p. 18, which would cost from 21s. to 25s. per lineal foot, according to its finish, would cost, if built like that which Mr. Dennis has erected here, from 35s. to 37s. per lineal foot; it is a sort of ' maison de luxe, ' and all such erections are more costly than plain structures. THE LARGE SPAN-ROOFED ORCHARD-HOUSE. The small span-roofed house will be found an agreeable and economic structure; but large gardens require large houses, and for these the following construction may be confidently recommended: --A cheap, large, span-roofed house, 20 feet wide, and 12 feet in height to the ridge, may be built after the following manner: --Oak posts, 6 inches by 4, and 7 J feet long, should be placed flatwise, so as to stand 5 feet clear out of the ground, and the soil well rammed round them, or concrete poured in so that they stand firmly. These posts should stand in two rows, 20 feet apart, 5 feet apart in the rows. On them should be nailed the plates, to receive the ends of the rafters, which may be nailed on to them, as recommended for the lean-to house, p. 6. These plates should be 5 inches by 3. The rafters should be 4 inches by 1, and nailed to the ridge-board at the apex of the roof, which should be 12 feet from the surface. The ridge-board should be 5 by 1 inches. The rafters must be prepared for glazing in the manner recommended for the lean-to house, p. 6, and placed 20 inches asunder. The sides and ends of the house should be formed of f-inch boards, and, for ventilation, a shutter, 18 inches wide, made into 15-feet length
