THE MUMMY'S TOMB (1942) is a sequel to 1940s THE MUMMY'S HAND. LON CHANEY JR. portrays the mummy (KHARIS) for the first time in his career and had audiences running for the exits at his appearance. Between 1932 and 1944, Universal Studios would produce five Mummy films with the first entry starring BORIS KARLOFF as The Mummy being the best of the series. In THE MUMMY (1932), Karloff was Im-Ho-Tep, revived after 3,700 years when a British archaeologist unwittingly reads the potent words of the sacred Book of Thoth. In the next film, THE MUMMY'S HAND, Im-Ho-Tep has become Kharis, a prince who loves the Princess Anaka. The mummy would remain Kharis in all of the subsequent Universal films to follow. A sixth mummy film titled ABBOTT and COSTELLO MEET THE MUMMY was released in 1955, but by that time the film was nothing more than a vehicle for Abbott and Costello. THE MUMMY'S TOMB is set in Mapleton, Massachusetts, where the new High priest, Turhan Bey has brought Kharis to wreak vengence on DICK FORAN and WALLACE FORD. The High Priest also has plans of ensnaring beautiful ELYSE KNOX as his Princess, using Kharis to capture her. It all ends in a fiery climax with the mummy supposedly being burned to death. If your a fan of Universal Horror, as I have said before, you are sure to enjoy THE MUMMY'S TOMB.Read full review
