For many reasons I didn't watch this movies for many years and now that I've seen it several times it's one that I wanted to add to my library. Like Days of Wine and Roses this is a harrowing tale about the damages done by alcohol both to the individual and to their family and friends.; the scene where he's picked up by the police and taken to the psych ward where the attendant tells him what his future will be is chilling as is the scene in the liquor store once he leaves the hospital. The movie is saved from being totally bleak and depressing by the ending. The supporting cast is wonderful, the brother who after years is finally fed up to the point of giving up and Jane Wyman as the girlfriend who says she no longer loves him but she refuses to give up despite all the disappointments of the past and the current situation. This is a movie that everyone who has been involved in this situation needs to see and encourage others to watch. While the hospitals may not be as terrible as they were then I'd imagine that it's not a place for those suffering from either alcohol poisoning or withdrawals despite the advances made in medicine. Until scientists learn which gene and how to neutralize it I'm afraid that those suffering with any type of substance abuse issues are in for a lifelong struggle.Read full review

"The lost weekend" is a movie that I love, because it illustrates what happens to alcoholics who are unable to quit drinking. It shows how it devastates the life of the alcoholic and all around him or her including the entire family. It shows it is a family disease and total abstinence is the only cure for this horrible disease. I bought it as it is a movie I always want to have in my home, whereby I can show others there is hope for the sufferring alcoholic. Who doesn't have an alcoholic in their family or a friend in such horrific circumstances? Also for myself, this movie, allows me to remember where I came from, and I can't have one single drink, a day at a time. It truely is a life saving movie, and what is more important than saving a life?
The classic rendition of the evils of alcoholism. It is well done and entertaining even though it deals with a depressing subject. It has the usual, old fashioned, happy ending but before that things are pretty stark and gritty. The featured players are very good in their roles and it garnered some Oscar awards.

this was groundbreaking for exploring what was considered a taboo subject in its day. people just didn't talk about alcoholism and film depictions of drinking were usually glamorous or whimsical. the lost weekend is anything but: it's a nightmarish sometimes hallucinatory vision of a struggling writer ( ray milland ) boozing and battling his demons over the course of several days. it won four academy awards including best picture and best director for billy wilder.
I always wanted to have my own copy of this film. I saw it many years ago when I was a young man and the drama always stayed with me. I'm glad that the DVD was available and less than $10. The DVD came within a week and I couldn't be more pleased with the transaction.
